Titles are one thing I honestly don’t think I’ve ever struggled with. I could swear most of my best ideas come to me with titles preattached. Sure some have made me happier than others, but I’ve never been at a loss that I can remember

My original title which was 4 words long and was a combination of 2 lines from my book was already taken which I never realised until 2 years in and every other replacement title I came up with was taken too. The title perfectly convayed the tone and theme so I thought I mastered my title and even titled my sequels the same way so I had a big problem. Eventually I came up with an original, befitting title : Red Glass Took a long time to get there but make sure you Google your title no matter how unique it is because it may well be taken already.

There are books with the same title. Obviously you don't want to name a book, "The Iliad," but just because another book has the same title doesn't mean that it is unusable. "Red Glass" sounds cool, too, though. Four-word titles are not too big. I mean, what if the book with the title that you want to use is sub-standard? You'd be letting an inferior book steal your title. Something to consider.

I use all approaches - because I also title my chapters. I am often vaguely disappointed when an otherwise excellent book merely uses "Chapter One", etc. When I recall a passage from "The Lord of the Rings", I associate it with, "The Council of Elrond", or "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit", or "The Ride of the Rohirrim"; I may not remember the chapter number, but I do remember that - along with the anticipation of the ensuing episode implied by that title.

I've noticed a lot of stories especially in fantasy that do the "A _____ of ________ and ________" a lot. As far as my own titles go, I know I want to capture the themes of the book im working on without it sounding generic. "The Wishing Stone" sounds really generic, something like "Bloodletter" sounds a lot more unique and dark in tone which it kinda is but doesn't really tell you what its about, more of who the character is.

My coach said that I shouldn't worry, because my publisher would determine the title :-D Anyways, I think it is not necessary to have to correct title when you start writing. Just use a working title. Also, the title should be googleable. Titles such as 'it' and '1984' won't work these days, because it is hard to search for them on the internet.

Generally, I would agree; in the case of my WIP, I am dead set on it and would resist a change. I always thought the third volume of TLotR should have been "The War of the Ring"; I thought "The Return of the King" too much let the cat out of the bag. I learned many years later that Tolkien had chosen the first one, but that Houghton-Mifflin changed it.

I used to name a ton of video games when I was a designer and one of our rules was that someone should be able to spell it if they had only heard the title, for searchability. If it’s a unique name or sound or portmanteau that looks fine on paper but out loud could be anything, you will inevitably lose some percentage of customers because they’ll have no idea how to write it and nothing will come up in their searches, so they’ll just move on.

kinda unrelated, my favorite book is called Epithet Erased: Prison of Plastic by Brendan Blaber! It's a sequel to the webseries on youtube, Epithet Erased. I read the ebook version through a PDF thing, and I think I read something about it being made quickly [the PDF thing, book took quite a while] which might explain the number of random mistakes. Anyway, I got even more off-topic, but I think the title [Prison of Plastic], comes from a thing in Chapter 7 - Prison of Plastic [kinda confusing-], the scene is: --- The only thing that could save her now was a wrecking ball. Something big and loud and stupid, shattering through it all. Something that didn’t care about rules or consequences. Something that didn’t care about stupid child custody laws or useless decisions made by foolish men in suits. Something that destroyed the toy houses and the law that everyone else seemed to view as ironclad. She would lay in bed at night trying to imagine what that wrecking ball might look like, but every day it was getting harder and harder to picture. Her greatest fear was that that day would never come. *She would probably live like this for the rest of her life, alone in a prison of plastic.* --- Also, the last chapter, Chapter 13, is called Wrecking Ball... I aint spoiling what happens, but coincidence? I THINK NOT- [I'll put the silly scene I'm talking about in replies. Y'know. So its not spoiled.] The term "Prison of Plastic" is also mentioned in the official song that's connected to the book, Epithet Erased: Say No!. The part where that's mentioned is: --- Your friends all say that you need to take a break before you’re broken But you’re terrified because in your eyes you know you need to go and- File your taxes Breaking your back & Wishing for freedom Life's inelastic, *Prison of Plastic?* You’ve gotta make it so! You can just say "no~oo!" --- And also at the end of the song.

And here's the shorter version of the spoilers: --- “You shouldn’t HAVE to!” Phoenica huffed. “Oh . . . I wish I were a grown-up so I could give your father a . . . a stern talking-to!” “Forget about him,” Trixie waved, taking out their phone and punching numbers into it. “I’ll ask my mom if you can sleep over at my place. . . . Aw beans, it’s almost nine. She is gonna kill me.” “Well, we can tell her what happened and it should be okay, right?” Phoenica suggested. “Naven was there! He can corroborate our story!” “I’d be happy to.” “Hmmm, okay,” Trixie tapped their chin. “In that case mom should be okay with it. You can take Dixon’s room. We’d only be able to keep you over for a few days, but that’s better than nothing, right?” Molly mumbled a response. She was clearly about to nod off. “I’ve got a better idea!” Giovanni smiled. He walked over to Molly, scooped her up, and held her in his arms. “I’m taking this. Bye!” “Huh? “Huh???” Before anyone had the time to react, Giovanni sprinted to the door and tried to swing it open with his elbow, slamming into it hard since Molly had locked it earlier. “Ow!!!” “. . . turn the deadbolt left,” she mumbled. “Oh, thanks Bear Trap. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! LATER, SUCKERS!!!” The other four were left blinking, staring out an open door as Vincent Murder, clad in spandex, picked up their friend and ran off with her into the dark of the night. ---

I definitely would go with the first one. The second one, since it's not in a language I'm familiar with (if it's based on a real one, that is), is very vague to me. I can't tell whether it's referring to a person, thing, place, or idea. It made more sense after I read your last sentence, but most readers will only see the title. Unless you add that info to your title as well, I guess. Aside from that, the first name does sound interesting. Hope that helps c:

Question on titles: How acceptable is it to have a book or series title that is the same or close to that of another author? For instance, for the original name of my series in progress, I wanted to go with 'Blood and Fire'. It fits perfectly with the overarching theme of my series, buuuut it just so happens some no-name author (George R.R. Martin 😊) has a book title that's exactly that. I also saw that Ryan Cahill wrote a novel called 'Of Blood & Fire'. So, make that two books. Now, mine would be the name of my series, but I decided to steer away from that as it seemed like it would cause issues. I know that titles are not copywrited, perse, but I would still assume there's some professional guideline that an author should adhere to. Thoughts?

Hi Alyssa, In an ideal world as an author you might get offers from multiple big 5 publishing houses, but how do you choose which is right for you? I'm using the tried and true method. A ____ for _____. All three books I'm outlining will have this title sceme. The first blank is a person/thing for the primary MC and the second is the name of the MC. I'm about to send my first WIP to Beta Readers (Today or tomorrow), then I'll start outlining the second book. All three books follow two men, both chubby sexy men, who fall in love over the course of their stories. Once I get my feedback from my Beta Readers in 3 weeks (time frame I've given them), and the edits from a wonderful friend of mine who's agreed to do edits (because she loves to), in exchange for a signed copy of the book when I publish. So wonderful. She doesn't know it, but when I write my acknowledgement, I'm going to ask her if I can mention her (just because I don't want her to get unwanted attention in case she doesn't want to be mentioned). I can't wait.
