Absolutely impressive how you’ve mastered a completely DIFFERENT skill set for each pitch bend implementation. You’re showing how no one particular implementation is “best,” just gotta master what you got! Dang, this is such a hard skill to learn but it sounds sublime once mastered!

Coming from a classical background (pianos and organs don't do pitchbend!), the jazz-fusion pitchbend technique has always been a bit of a struggle for me. Your Jan Hammer style bends in the first few minutes are flawless - I've been practising them all day. Another great video, and I am in awe of your playing technique - you just make it all seem so effortless!
@mootbooxle
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bill! I'm so glad that you found this to be helpful. It only seems effortless because I've been doing it for over 30 years! The pitch and mod wheel stuff was something I gravitated to right away. It really comes down to muscle memory and sort of mentally visualizing where you want the pitch to start and end. How's it going?

Great stuff, but about whammy bars: most guitarists rarely use them for bending notes within a phrase. They often use them for vibrato, ending a phrase with dive, or quick dips or effects like the cat purr. The blues-y bending stuff you hear most often is done with the (left) fretting hand, usually the second or third finger. You can only bend notes up with your fingers. A semitone or a wholetone is easy, anything from a minor third and more gets exponentially harder. Apart from bending _to_ a note, what guitarist often do is pre-bending, then picking a note and then relaxing the string down to the un-bent note.
@mootbooxle
2 жыл бұрын
did you know that I also play guitar? But thank you for the info. I was specifically talking about players like Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Beck who have often used the whammy for bends.
@spotlight-kyd

@@mootbooxle I'm guessing you play many instruments. :) Yeah, I guess, this info was for synth players, who don't play guitar, looking to emulate guitarists. Forget the whammy (until later), look at their left hand.

Nice tips there Moot. It really is practice practice practice. Crazy to think there is so much variety in these pitch and mod controls. Ribbons are cool for doing taping like guitar effects and my all time favorite is the old Oberheims. The levers on those early synths are great. From the OB-X thru the Matrix synths of the 80's they are the most natural to me and easiest to develop the muscle memory. Listen to the synth solo on Queen's - I Want To Break Free and the bending is so expressive and musical. If the new DSI OB6 had levers I'd be saving my pennies for it.
@mootbooxle

Thank you! The Oberheim levers are really weird to me! I guess it's the backwards thing. I always seem to bend up every time I mean to bend down! lol. I love Oberheim synths though. Hard to pick a favorite!

I think the best tip I can give is - do NOT use modwheel for vibrato. Use pitch bend for vibrato, this way you can shape it yourself, both the frequency and onset and depth! You can do it on the wheel, you don't need Nord's bend stick to do it (although it will feel the best on the pitch stick, that is true). Learn from Jens Johansson! :)

well 1st of all it was an amazing video and i learned a lot from it and i subscribed to u brother. but i want some tips from u sir i am 25 years old and i started doing music when i was 21 and everything i have learned i have learned via youtube i play keyboards a old yamaha psr E433 and i have never tried to play any synth stuffs before so i am thinking of getting myself a midi controller for playing synth leads because i want to learn how to play lead so i am asking you should i get a keyboard with a joystick or a traditional wheel setup. which one is in your opinion is better for playing lead and modulation. because out off all the videos that i have seen yours where the most fun and informative to me so i think u will suggest me good. by the way i have never ever tried to play my psr's pitch bending wheel. so i have 0 experience is both setup and their work flow. and sir i do welcome you to check my channel where i normally sing and play keyboards. have a great day brother you are just amazing.

Kranty & keys I appreciate your comment! Thank you for the kind words. One of the only keyboards I had back in the day was a PSR-530, just with the single pitch wheel and no modulation wheel. I learned how to get around pretty well on that thing! There are techniques for doing vibrato using the pitch wheel. I highly recommend getting a controller that has the traditional wheels! The joysticks and stuff, as I’ve shown, are a different technique. All the best to you!

A question I've asked a few times in relation to (what I think is ) voice-led chord progressions, I'm talking about the little Moot Points jingle - do you come up with a melody, then almost back-fill in the rest of the notes, and end up with whatever chords, or do you come up with a series of chords, and voice them in a way that gives you a melody you like?
@mootbooxle
6 жыл бұрын
MrMargaretScratcher great question! in the case of “Moot Points”, I knew I wanted it to say that, so I just created a kind of abstract harmonization and melody at the same time. It’s that 80s/90s children’s TV influence, similar to what Bill Wurtz does. Normally my approach to reharmonizing things is to attempt to extrapolate it into something that plays with tension in an unexpected way. i have a great example in mind but don’t know where to find it right at this moment; I did a jazz-funk version of the Super Mario Bros underground music for a compilation album, and at one point I expanded that melody out into weird jazz harmony. My guitar teacher in college called this “chord-melody arrangement”. Have a great day- thank you for the interest question!
@MrMargaretScratcher

Ah okay, I think what I got from that is kind of if you were pretending to do a news bulletin sting joking around with a friend and you're like "BAH-DAN-BAM-BAM-BAAAAAHHHM! WELCOME... TO THE MOOTBOOXLE NEWS NETWORK" You know what the sting has to sound like from a monophonic perspective, you just need to flesh it out into the thing you hear in your head to get that feeling. Theory and experience both play a big part there no doubt, plus relative pitch, from...your...mind's...ear?.... Oh shit I might have to lie down I'd never thought of that. And now I'm dictating loudly what I'm typing in my own head... Wow... I'm currently doing a neo soul version of the vocoder verses from *the* classic Italo Disco track "Take a Chance" by Mr Flagio: kzitem.info/news/bejne/23qMxZh4kqJlm2U ,nothing too outlandish, just pushing the chords into 9ths, nowhere near as hypepr jazz as what you and Bill Wurz did, where pretty much every note's a whole ruddy bluddy different chord, but I'm getting there. Anyway if you made this this far, well done and thank you. I studied (Ie ripped the audio and played it in ableton at various slow tempos until I had it down at full tilt ) your Odyssey vs Minioog (maybe part 2) jam and that was definitely a 'level up' moment, so many thanks once again :)
