I’ve heard of guys putting at post next to evergreens and deciduous trees to keep deer from rubbing.i lost a ton of white spruce I had planted at 18” tall when they got to 4-5’ the bucks rubbed darn near all of them in one of the bedding areas. So frustrating after all the work it takes to plant them plus the cost. It’s just not feasible to fence all of them. I usually try to plant at least a couple hundred spruce each season. But you know you lose 30% to drought. And other things. What have you had success doing? Obviously fruit trees and chestnuts, ROD those get fencing but maybe just throwing volume at them will help

I completely get it! Idk if you watched the later part of video but just like those poplar cuttings you can place evergreens in between branches of trees you fall just like that. It’s been working fantastic. I honestly was shocked every cutting on that island of trees was still untouched. But yea the others need to be fenced unfortunately.

@@TradgerFarms yeah I was surprised as well especially with aspen/popple. They love that stuff. I started hinge cutting to enclose trees this season now. It blows because I thought all was good until they started rubbing. That didn’t cross my mind. But now that I think about it, these are the only evergreen trees in a hardwood stand they were bound to be attracted. Live and learn. Be a little more cautious now

Seems like the deer can't eat once they get to 6 ft. If that's the case, what is the point? Thanks.

The tree types on the middle of the pocket were initially for fast and tall cover to help breakup the field and look more natural as a “diversity pocket” but you still make an excellent point! Some of the shrubs are preferred browse while others like silky willow aren’t necessarily preferred browse. So it should be a good mixture. Especially for when the fence comes down.

Any updates on how your mock scrape using the post has turned out? NW Ohio hunting a reclaimed field with no trees for scrapes
