I love druids. Mechanically they are the most diverse. They can scout, tank, heal, summon and control. Not to mention information gathering that Noone else can access. The Sheppard druid can talk to animals without using spells. The rats in the sewers and the birds in the trees are now key witnesses. All druids gain access to speak with plants, so now the trees of the forest can help guide the party in the right direction. Druids aren't murder hobos, they're synthetic to all of nature.

In a mechanical view only, druids are not a combat class. They are a support/control class that can defend themselves. I am well aware that there are many exceptions to that statement. Looking just at the PHB and ignoring subclasses, the druid has access to 17 1st level spells. Of those, 6 of them are 'in combat' spells with only 1 of those that actually deals damage. Looking at 2nd level, the druid has access to 21 spells, only 9 of them are used in combat. Druids at their core are about protecting and conserving, not attacking and destroying. But just like a parent protecting their child, a druid can fight to protect the lands they dwell.

Just some thoughts from an old fan of the druid class: The druid interaction with metal is an anachronistic holdover from the DND days when Pallies had to be lawful good, and clerics could only use blunt weapons. 1. There is no longer a mechanical penalty to using metal armor, and flavor text is easily overridden by individual characters. 2. Even back in the old DND days, there were exceptions to the anti-metal, as Mielikki druids were able to use metal just fine. This indicates the usage of metal was dependent on the specific oath, and not because metal inherently limited the gathering of divine magic. True Mielikki is an explicit exception... but so are the PCs of most DND worlds. Would a mountain or earth god care that I use naturally occurring minerals? Grumbar explicitly loves rich metal veins! What about Silvanus himself for that matter, with domain simply encompassing nature? Nowadays druids don't need specific deities, and can draw power from nature itself... which includes metals. 3. For the inevitable "metal armors are processed and unnatural" crowd; *they aren't as processed as leather armor and hides.* -With metal armor you 'refine' the earth by isolating the specific minerals, and merely shape that natural occurring metal. -With hides and leather, you 'refine' the animal itself by isolating its skin, but then you literally have to chemically alter the structure of the skin proteins via the tanning process. Just look at the beamhouse operations alone, soaking, liming etc. Can you really call that more natural than metal armor? Druids used to be prohibited from metal weapons as well, but that was done away with, and now metal armors have no mechanical penalty. From leather armor, to brewing potions and outright performing alchemy... these acceptable activities are just as unnatural, if not more so. In short, the metal "restriction" doesn't make any sense from any direction you approach it from. It's easily circumvented story-wise, and isn't enforced by the game in any way now... so feel free to do it if you want! The rules and logic are on your side.

All fair points! I very much prefer the flavor of metal imposing restrictions on Druids unless they have some fun narrative ideas (ie Toph metal bending in Avatar). @@RollWithMePod I've actually never understood the restriction of metal with Druids. Metal derives from ore. Which... is a mineral found in nature. Yes, the production and/or manipulation of said ore is obviously a result of human/inhuman interaction but the existence of it is due to nature itself. Having said that... this is a an old gripe from an old gamer and I make my best attempt to see the rationale behind whatever decision is made at the table for the sake of fun and keeping the game rolling.

I've been playing a Circle of the land Drow Druid Faction agent in an Out of the Abyss campaign for more than a year. Jumped in at level 8, now level 13. Absolutely love it. He's about natural order, not necessarily nature. Tragic backstory involves being trafficked out of Menzoberranzan as a child. by his parents who were outed as associates of Jhaezred Chalseen. Raised by druids outside Silverymoon before getting involved as a spy within the emerald enclave. His utility is incredible. Responses to everything. Greater invisibility? Transform into giant bat and use blindsight + increased speed. Mold the world around you with a number of spells, heal your party, scouting, AOE spells to help in combat, transport the party via plants or wind walk. My DM has told me he has to plan encounters based on my utility which is endless. He never expected me to blindsight his archmage when he tried to retreat with greater invisibility.

I think it has more to do with removal from nature. Leather comes from life. It has deep history as the hide of a beast. Metal comes from earth, yes, but it is so far removed from the source that it becomes a synthetic material. Less about who made it and more about what it’s made from (or into).
@zedek_
3 жыл бұрын
@@RollWithMePod Comes from nature either way. The emphasis on 'life' is arbitrary, especially since druids could explicitly worship Grumbar, the elemental deity of earth. Not to mention the Druid of the Land, Stars, Wildifre, and Dream subclasses indicate the overall connection to the natural world that goes far beyond just living creatures. Not to mention all the elemental spells. Also, _animal skins_ come from life. Leather specifically does not, but rather comes from an extremely intensive process that literally chemically alters the skin: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanning_(leather) This is far more synthetic than the mere concentration and shaping of metal.
@vincentbrancato5146
2 жыл бұрын
It's pretty obvious when you actually use your brain. Leather is mad directly from a living beast with very little processing besides drying and tanning. Steel goes through an entire forge process that is must more industrial and needs a forge. How many forges do you see chilling in nature?

As a general rule of thumb, I don’t give powerful home brew spells or items to any character below level 5 unless it’s for a very specific narrative reason. I play a druid and just wonder if this is necessary? Druids have several really strong 1st lvl spells. Entangle and Feary Fire are solid combat support options. Goodberry is amazing for ooc healing (the 24h duration allows for druids to use remaining spell slots at the and of the day). Healing Word is a strong option to get a party member back up when needed. Come lvl 3 druids have some really solid lvl 2 options like Flaming Sphere* or (if they can get the imo unreasonably expensive component) Summon Beast. They also get area denial/damage in Spike Growth. A situational, but very strong Heat Metal. Not to mention turning the entire party into ninjas with Pass Without Trace. Then at lvl 5 druids get Conjure Animals and yeah... What I'm trying to say is that druids are pretty strong at lower lvls (moon druid are straight out broken) without homebrew. I don't even think your spell is all that. So to me it's more a question of what kind of character your player want to play? If he wants to play a blaster/damage dealer druid might not be the best choice (even if Conjure Animals is one of the strongest damage spells in the game). If he is unhappy playing a druid because he wanted his character to be something else, I'd suggest letting him switch to something that will fit him better. If he's interested in playing a druid as is, but unsure as to how the class works I'd suggest him looking into some online guides and forums, it can be a class that takes some work to get the best out of at first. TLDR: Druids are strong early on and really strong mid game. It really shouldn't be necessary to homebrew. A bigger question is if this is the right class for this player? *I prefer FS to Moonbeam as it uses a bonus action which fits better into the druids action economy.

This should work, and is a good example as to why druids are so cool. :-) As a mechanical tip moon druids are more dependent upon their wild shapes than other druids. So while they are "better at it" they are also worse of entering combat without them. This might limit your out of combat use compared to a Shepherd or Druid of the land. Tips as to play and build. You have a large spell list and you'll get more mileage out of it if you read up on the various spells before playing. Your best spells are consentration and not dependent upon hits/saving throws (Conjure spells, polymorph, plant growth, etc.). As such a focus on protecting your concentration is a good ide. Constitution can be as or more important than wisdom and the War Caster and Resilient Constitution feats are really good. Conjure spells (animals and woodland Beeings) are your strongest options when available, but can be disruptive and hard to handle. I recommend looking into them and talking with your GM as to how you handle them. Moon Druids are OP at lvl 2-4. Turning into a brown bear with two attacks and tons of hp is a lot stronger than what other classes do at these lvls. You should be aware if you're overshadowing the other players.
