Fantastic lesson Jack! I'm working through your Truefire course right now and the sections on the functioning dominant chords, V to I cadences (real game changer for me) and the altered dominant sections are pure gold! I'm slow going through those since it's very new to me but it's changed a lot for my playing. The diminished arpeggios are a real ear catcher when you throw them in. Great stuff 🤘

This is so cool . Do you study ' jazzstandards' also ? If so , is your approach to playing standards simular as in playing a jazzblues ?
@JackRuch
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, obviously there's other scales and concepts that come it to play with different chord changes. But overall my approach is similar.
@jerrywilson4371

Hey Jack you're a really great player. I'm curious, do you play and then use your knowledge of theory to explain what you played or are you truly pre-thinking about moving to the 3rd of the n3xt chord and then playing a certain scale, you know what I mean, aware of every note that's played? It's impressive either way
@nikhilfranco7241
2 жыл бұрын
With how much experience he has playing its likely the former
@JackRuch
2 жыл бұрын
When I'm playing I'm usually following my ear and playing the things I hear. I'm not really thinking about any theory. But when I practice, I will sit down and really focus in on specific ideas, note choices and theory concepts. Then that stuff comes out when I'm just playing.

Over the II -V in the fourth bar ( Fm/Bb) , is that line in 16th notes? The f-minor scale and the enclosure are eight notes, and the diminished arpeggio plus the chromatic line is another eight notes. How do fit that into one bar?
@fenderblues20

Great lesson Jack. One scale definitely does not fit all when it’s not a diatonic progression. I’m finally starting to accept that!

I like your playing and teaching style, but mostly I like that you teach what I want to play - jump, swing, and jazz blues. Unlike many other teachers, you name the note and/or interval, but NOT the string & fret (tablature). Before I sign up for your Patreon, I have a question. I hear you say the solos from your lessons are tabbed out on the Patreon page. Do you also provide the solos written out in standard musical notation? I refuse to look at any more tabs because I consider them a detriment to learning. Thank you!

Hey JP- you probably already got an answer, but in case you didn't, Jack provides everything in musical notation on Patreon. If you haven't you should sign up!

Hi Jack. Would the solo work over a straight 1 4 5 or do you need to have those extra chords in the progression to make the solo work. Pure monumental playing.
@JackRuch
2 жыл бұрын
No you would need the chord changes there. These lines don't quite fit over a regular 1-4-5

Hi Jack, ideally like all of your videos -.Have one question please: I did not understand the choice of D diminished over th B flat ? Can you please explain it to me ? Thanks a lot
@JackRuch
2 жыл бұрын
D diminished is the upper extension triad of Bb7. The notes D, F, and Ab are the 3rd, 5th and b7th of Bb7. They're also the notes of a D diminished triad.

a thought provoking lesson, just one question: why over the IV chord F7 we play a A diminished arpeggio (or C dim. or Eb dim. or F# dim. for that matter)? It sounds absolutely fine, though I would expect a F7 arpeggio to be chosen. I am not adept in theory so the reason we choose that A dim. escapes me.
@reinh
2 жыл бұрын
The IV of Bb is Eb. The #IVdim7 (or its inversion, Idim7) can function as a sub for the IV (Edim7 is a rootless Eb7b9) and/or as an auxiliary diminished (Idim7 for I). As such it is a common sub for the I in the 2nd bar (I7 | Idim7 | I7 | I7 a la Robert Johnson) or as here the IV in the 6th bar (IV7 | #IVdim7 | I7). The #IVdim7 inversion also has nice chromatic bass movement (Eb, E, F) from the root of IV to the fifth of I, but ofc any inversion has the same function. The #IVdim7 is also sometimes used as a (lower) chromatic approach to the V7, which is the third common function of diminished chords.

Hey jack I was wondering how you get us a killer tone! Is it the uad box/ amp? Such clarity!
@JackRuch
2 жыл бұрын
The ox box definitely helps me crank up the amp with out having to be too loud in the room, and the cabinet simulations sound really great. Also the headstrong amp I use is a really great amp.
