FiddleHed is the fun way to learn fiddling online! In this lesson we’ll learn how to play E minor on the fiddle and then we’ll learn to play the chord back-up for O’Keefe’s slide and Swallowtail Jig.
If you haven’t watched the first two lessons on chords I strongly recommend you do that:
We’ll review the C chord we learned in the second lesson on chords which was G0D1.
But guess what? That same shape can work as E minor (Em). I’ll explain why in a later lesson on chord theory for those of you who are interested. If you’re not interested, that’s fine too. The most important thing is to just learn these simple chords, start playing them in progressions, and then start trying to play them in tunes.
Here are the chords for the A part of O’keefe’s slide:
We’ll play D major as G1D0 and E minor as G0D1.
Em /D /Em /D /
Em /D /D /Em
*Note: An upper case E with lower case “m” means E minor. For major chords, we just use an upper case letter, so “D” means D major.
Using the same chord patterns we’ll also do the A part of Swallowtail Jig.
Em /Em /D /D /
Em /Em /D /Em /
I made some “Learning Chunks” on the FiddleHed site to help you do this. These focused exercises contain sheet music, tabs and mp3 snippets to guide you on each step of your fiddle journey.
These and all new lesson pages can be viewed for one week after publication with a FREE trial membership. Check it out here: fiddlehed.com
And after you sign up, I’ll also send you a mini-course of lessons specially designed for your skill level.
Alrighty. Play every day, have fun 😀 and thanks for making music 🙏
Now, go fiddle with it...
