Good intro to muting and picking while holding down the bottom of a great song.

Hey James. I’ve gotta disagree with you on your recommendation to apply alternate picking on this song. I almost exclusively use alternate picking on all songs, BUT, this is one song where I believe all down strokes are needed to replicate the sound and effect of the bass. And the tempo of the song makes it pretty easy to do so. In this case, alternate picking just doesn’t get the job done.

Cool… that’s fair enough :-) I agree for a more consistent tone downs would be better… as each stroke sounds a little different.

So I'm a newbie so pardon the ignorance, but you refer to chords yet you are only playing a single note. Your hands look as if they are almost playing an actual cord, like a guitar while strumming only one note. What do I misunderstand here?

All cool. As bass players out job primarily is to play the bottom or root note of the chord. Our bass lines can contain other notes from the chords that guitar player and piano player may be playing. The chords provide the framework we construct our bass lines around Make sense?

Actually, that’s a very good and valid question. As bass players, we need to know what chord is being played at each juncture in the song; this is vital to be able to outline the “chord tones” (the triads that give each chord their distinctive sound). This allows us to move away from the root note and become more advanced in our playing. It’s also the means to come up with riffs, fills, and transitional notes between chord changes. Again, good question.

No; I like the talking. That means you’re explaining things which helps in learning. Too many people on KZitem record a video of them playing a song (no talking) and title it, “How to play....” when in fact it’s just them showing off.
