I really enjoy your videos. I'm 65 and started playing 2 years ago. My advice is to have your guitar setup so the strings aren't too high, correct technique, and practice, practice, practice. When you try to practice and nothing seems to go right, STOP and try again later. It's easy to pick up bad habits trying to force yourself through a bad practice session which you will eventually have to break.

ive been playing bass for a few years now, and ive really enjoyed it. i tried guitar before, but i just couldnt get clean chords. i always blamed it on small hands, because my fingers are so short that they barely touch at the widest part of the neck. but its stupid to blame small hands, because ive been playing piano since i was 4 and dispite my tiny hands, i can easily play octaves because i just grew up forcing my hands to be flexible. i dont have my bass anymore, it belonged to a family friend who recently wanted it back, so now i have my guitar just staring back at me, begging me to play again. im used to the weight of bass strings, so these feel like nothing to hold, but somehow chords are still hard to play. i think its because with bass, i wasnt punished for having my thumb on top of the neck instead of behind it, because i could use 2 fingers to hold a string if i needed it, but now i need 1 finger per string and even using 2, it sounds tinny and hollow, so im glad i watched this video to remind me to have good hand posture
@ResistTheNonsense

How about this. From playing I get grooves in the calluses on my finger tips. If I don't hit every string exactly in that groove then the strings "pop" into those grooves and messes up the sound. Ever have that complaint come up??

Hi Tomas - love your videos - thanks! Can you give some advice regarding finger pressure? I started playing three weeks ago (I’m 49) and I’ve been practicing every day and watching a lot of instructional videos. One thing I’ve begun to notice is that experienced guitarists seem to have a very light touch when fingering chords and it made me wonder if my difficulties in getting my chords “clean” are due to too much finger pressure and/or having soft finger tips?
@TomasMichaud
6 жыл бұрын
Hi David, excellent question. The short answer is you want to use just enough pressure to get the note to sound and no more. Experience musicians have developed this technique over years. A good way to work on this is to do a fairly simple warm-up lesson every time you practice and really pay attention to how much pressure you need to get the notes to sound. Work at lightning up the pressure but still getting good sounding notes. It takes time. There are many other issues involving getting clean chords. Here's one of several videos that will help: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pZmZyIKAjqWoo5w

Hi Ash. You may want to have someone who plays guitar look at your guitar. Make sure the strings on to high off the fretboard. Also make sure it's in tune. Then it's a matter of making fine adjustments with your fingers until they sound right. Oh... and make sure the nails on your left-hand are trimmed.

My problem is that I keep hitting the low E string with my strumming hand when I’m playing power chords on the two strings below. I’ve recently started playing again after a few years and only just noticed this! Before I was playing power chords by having my strumming hand pre positioned then picking the strings instead of strumming the guitar in one swooping strum if you see what I mean? I’ve been practicing a couple of hours a night, I’m sure I’ll get there in the end but does anybody else have this problem?

Russell Gilchrest problem solved! I can’t believe I had this problem for so many years. I just put it down to not enough practice until I found out I was doing it all wrong!! Simply put the very tip of your index finger ever so slightly under the bottom E but just enough do that it’s touching and it will basically mute that string. That way you can strum without hearing it even though you’re hitting it 👍🏻

Or you might have a (what I call it xD) ”fake guitar” Where the strings is thicker and look more plastic.
