Is it possible that in that opening D chord hes muting the e string and not playing the F sharp, but playing what i call dirty D ... a,d,a,d or just d,a,d. I just looked how i hold it and it does look like im making a bar but im not.

Always great to see The Kinks get some recognition. I wonder what their reputation would be like had they not been banned from performing in the US in the mid sixties...

They played this song in the US, on SNL. *They had a 4 year ban. 65-69, yet some bands were still having trouble cracking the US. I think they would’ve had hits at first, then flopped with the concept stuff. The US was open to them as of 1970, and they were very successful, especially touring this album.

@@CorbCorbin but think about what happened in popular music during those 4 years. Yikes! If you’d asked me to pick the 4 year period with the most incredible changes in popular music, I probably would pick 1965-1969. The Doors and Jefferson Airplane formed in 1965. Santana in 1966 and the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966. In 1967, the Monterey Pop Festival launched Janis Joplin’s career, and that concert had such an eclectic mix of performers and performances. Everything from the Mommas and Papas to The Who and Jimi with seriously hard rock. By 1969 we were ready for Woodstock. I saw the Kinks live twice - once in London 1980 and again on the Low Budget tour in the US. They were so much fun in concert!

Great lesson Thom. I saw them play this live at Brunel University back in the 1970s. Ray Davies drank a whole bottle of Bell's whisky during the set! When my friend Lola got married I learned to play the song from a Kinks songbook and played it at her wedding. She was highly amused until she figured out the words!

Great presentations and lesson. So nice to see the editing and bringing the band vid in and your lessons editing multi camera. a lot of work to put it together (I know the efforts for that).....Bravo and thanks! just a note.....when needed, the embellishments are the most needed for many learners, nice. I wish I had more Rolling Stones embellishments. Love that Taylor sound!

I've known this song for decades, so no need for the lesson. But I had to chime in and say that Taylor sounds KILLER! It's often hard to have that translate over a KZitem video, but you have it totally dialed in. Cheers!

Great song choice and well explained lesson. You're right, the bridge is tough for a beginner so I would suggest playing the A on the fifth fret, then drop to the C#m (4th fret) to the B (7th fret). Holding basically the same chord shape throughout.

Great lesson and great sound from the Taylor. I've been playing this song a lot lately because I've been having a "Gibson" problem with the strings binding in the nut. I hate it when the top E string is perfect in the E shape but is sharp at fret 2 in the D shape. Lots of polishing has worked magic. I'm putting off replacing the nut but how Gibson shipped it so badly cut is beyond me.

Thom, one piece of random feedback: I much prefer when your video thumbnails feature an image of yourself in it (as opposed to the sole image of the highlighted artist). When I'm looking at my subscription page, it makes it much easier to identify that any particular video is indeed a Guitar Pilgrim video.

Holey Moley! Why are there no comments x 1 year. This is an excellent video! Great song!! Far Better than average guitar lesson The Kinks are so underappreciated!!! Do you folks fear "Lola" ? I would have, like Ray, feared Lola, but I am old now and secure. So is he. "Lola" helps us all to accept diverisity. (admittedly, it was a mind-fuck at the time) 😺😸😺😸😺😸🏳🌈🏳🌈

It’s funny because in that video you can tell they’re not really playing the instruments maybe they’re singing live but they certainly aren’t playing live it’s too bad too because the little licks that the guitar player is doing behind Ray Davies on the album are spectacular and I wish you profiled those far more interesting licks than the acoustic part
