You’re being slept on my dude. This is the most mechanically focused and detailed review and explanation of this game I’ve seen. I watched tons of reviews trying to get a feel for this but all anyone had to say was ‘many powers, much thematic’ - pure fluff

"Imbalance isn't a bug it's a feature. This is an Asymmetrical game" That told me all I needed to know, and I bought a copy. Marvel being Marvel means that not everything is watered down, equaled out. Sometimes heros or villains are outclassed but they fight their best anyways. And certain characters are on another level than others, no matter how many fans they have. This is part of the secret sauce that makes Marvel great, and makes stories feel true to an actual universe, and not cheap PLOT ARMOR cop-outs left and right. That Marvel was not afraid to let this shine in their RPG model is a BIG selling point for me. Where balance is needed, you could simply limit certain nights' adventures to only certain ranks, or enforce a system where players should play a variety of ranks and not always go for a demigod tier.

SO incredibly spot on, thank you. In basic terms, the game reminds me of something between D&D and action RPG video games, with super heroes of course. I personally like it a lot and agree with your analysis. I LOVED Marvel Heroic RPG (2013), but that game was also meant for interactive narration (which is good) as well as increased character balancing. I like the way this one has more overt "tiers" of heroes, as well as distinctive specializations. Would you say that if there are objects nearby a character should also be able to Skulk behind them to avoid hits, with the object having a melee defense of either 10 (since it wasn't the original target), or even 0?
@WorldofGameDesign

Very glad you liked it! I feel like Skulk is specifically for other characters, but to each his own.

The big challenge that I have with the Powers section is that Flight 1 and Speed 1 are inaccessible to Rank 1 heroes. This means that a beginning character like Lightspeed from Power Pack wouldn't be able to be created. There should be Rank 1 options for these powers.

Having played Mutants & Masterminds, I recognize a lot of the same philosophy in this and I approve. Gotta disagree with Black Widow's character sheet though. Distinguishing Feature shouldn't be "None" but rather "Luscious red hair", but that's just me. Love that she has Slow-motion Dodge as a power though. :P Happy to hear the Fastball Special is in the game.

Question: Is throwing someone or something based off of Melee, like how the ability descriptions say it's used for punching or throwing, or is it based off of Agility, as suggested in the description of the Fastball Special reaction?

@WorldofGameDesign

It does not come with a story, no. Though there is a short adventure on their website. There's a big adventure book coming out in the next couple of months, and more slated for after that. As far as whether it's good for beginners, I would say yes, but not for kids under 13 unless they have an adult to help guide them through some of the more intricate mechanics.

I am confused, is it just a guide book? IS there a set of figures or cards or anything to help out? Or is marvel being cheap, per usual and just making a book with rules and making you come up with it?
@WorldofGameDesign

No cards or figures. This is an RPG in the same vein as Dungeons & Dragons. You can definitely use your Marvel heroclick miniatures or something like that if you want, but it also works very well without them.

I wish you would compare and contrast this game a bit more to other superhero games and not D&D:/ For telling superhero stories, this game, at first impression, seems a bit restricted and clunky to me. I loved the cinematic way Marvel Heroic handled it, or the narrative approach that Masks, Truth & Justice or Atomic Robo is going for... I am a bit curous about how it handles though, but seeing defined powers with set distances and so on, rarely work in a supers game for me:/
@Aardvark892
