Bingo, on both counts! I hate it when searching for a good tutorial, to have to wait through a lot of talk and slow demonstration, only to find that the poster doesn't even play the song correctly! I also really like the approach taken here, breaking it down into left hand then right hand, putting every phrase in context so we know where the downbeat is, and most of all, not belaboring where every finger goes. Perfect balance between clarity and brevity. Especially given this song: anyone who needs a slower tutorial probably won't be able to play it anyway!

@@pattygoogly3820 I guess I wasn't clear: this video is a great example of how to do a tutorial! He starts with himself playing the song (so we can tell if it's worth wading in deeper.) Then he breaks it down into understandable chunks, making it clear what the timing is, context, everything. I meant no discouragement, and I agree with you completely. Perhaps what I should have said was, if you're going to do a guitar tutorial, watch this one first to see how to do it well!

If you younger guys want to learn some good finger-picking songs, learn some songs from the 1970s such as Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, James Taylor, and Jim Croce. These are simpler, but very good songs to learn finger-picking and having them in your repetoire will always keep you on track for being able to learn the harder stuff. When playing Jim Croce songs, remember that he used two guitar players; himself and a backup so don't get frustrated and tried to learn what you hear on the actual song, because you'll never do it. Learn it your way. I learned "Operator" and I have to play it simple but most people can never tell.

I started the first week of March and I have the whole song down now, except for the solo part. I can't find the tab for the solo part - I guess I'll have to learn it by ear. I'm playing the version fretted at the 6th fret. It's certainly not flawless yet but it does flow pretty smoothly if I keep the tempo slow enough.

I can play this song almost exactly like you and Lindsey....just gotta brush it up a bit. You helped me enormously. This is instructing the way its supposed to be done. Hats off to you. Thank you

The hardest part is teaching your thumb to work independently from your other fingers. Still struggling with some parts
@niefmer
6 жыл бұрын
Independently may be a mischaracterization. The fingers are either going with the thumb on the 1-2-3-4 beat, or on the "and" between them.

This one is giving me some fits but I've finally got the intro after an hour. Not perfect but it's getting there. It's actually the left hand giving me problems as I'm used to fingerpicking and travis picking. I often muffle the G with my ring finger. Singing it while playing is going to be challenging I can already tell.

This is a tough song to play. It is not easy playing within that barred fret in D position. Can be awkward as hell and takes practice. I actually learned it in a C-chord position on the 6th fret with the 6th string tuned down to match the drop D note and the 4th string down a step. For the newbie it makes it much easier to play. I really should learn it properly though. Ha ha! Nice job!

I can play bar chords, but that barred D position is making me feel like a day 1 beginner, LOL! Just going to keep coming back to it every day and get the strength for it.

Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials for that tricky bit you are talking about, move the travis picking pattern, and the timing seems easier (try the thumb, to play the g string, Its just like a banjo roll then, with descending bassline, sounds pretty right to my ear. Nice job,btw, not telling you how to do it.

I've really gotten into Fleetwood Mac recently. I mean, I've listened to and liked them for over a decade now but for some reason my interest level has sky-rocketed over the past couple of weeks. This song is one of the prettiest I've ever heard and has quickly become my favorite Fleetwood Mac cut. I was on my way home listening to it trying to imagine the chord progressions and positions. I was 100% sure this was two guitar parts up until now. Buckingham is a very underrated guitarist and composer. Very impressive riff. Thanks for running through it for me! This sounds exactly like the recording.

James Cahours Hey James, thanks for the nice comment bud. On the actual recording, I'm guessing there's probably at least 4 guitars. Lots of doubling going on and little parts added in everywhere. I agree with you about LB, he is an amazing guitar player, very precise and accurate. cheers

Very cool. I like the way you break it down into 7 digestible sections. And then you play those sections at a speed that mere mortals can follow. Very easy to follow along and learn. I especially like the way you mention the change that is difficult for you. Let's us know we are not alone when we find parts difficult as well. Now I just have to practice to get all the parts pulled into one cohesive song.

Megan I have very small hands and it's almost impossible to play that 3 bar stretch. I got the rest of it, but that one is making me want to find a luthier. A cutout would help, too, but I've got the fingerpicking down. Maddening.
