The first performance of "Silent Night" was on Christmas Eve, 1818, in the town of Oberndorf, Austria. It had been composed that year by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr, with the original German title of "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht". It has since become one of the most well-known and most translated Christmas hymns worldwide.
