Hey dude. I've had a few bass teachers a few guitar teachers but my brother started teaching me when I was 6. I did a bit in high school but I never studied at a university or college. I'm basically self taught and practiced for many hours a day in my teen years. I play for at least 6 hour most days.

Killer lesson Chris. I should point out that I think that on the original version of Youthanasia all songs are in E flat. For some reason on the god awful remaster that Dave did in 2004 it sharpened the pitch slightly.

Hey Chris, I'm a big fan of your stuff. I've definitely been able to learn, incorporate and reinterprete a lot of your lessons into my live playing, and I've always gone back to check your stuff out on your page. Your guitar tone is sick! I do have one piece of constructive criticism to offer on this one tho- You nail the style, and the notes, and most of the feel down to this wicked solo. I can definitely carry along with this piece to the song and it fits neatly in place as I watch it. One piece of advice that I'd offer to perfect this solo is the use of vibrato! Marty Friedman, while highly skilled in advanced melodic phrasing also made good use of a pretty wicked vibrato technique. In comparison to players like Kirk Hammett who really had a sort of short touch on bending notes (not unlike one of his favorite players Angus Young who is famous for his trademark Chuck Berry style of quick, snappy bends), Marty was almost on the opposite spectrum of vibrato. He had a lot of movement in the notes that he sustained, and he would bounce those notes like a ball, much like Yngwie Malmsteen, or even Zakk Wylde. We can most likely guess that he was a pretty big influence on guys like Synyster Gates, who has some sick ass vibrato techniques apart from his use of tremolo. I think adding a touch of flair to your vibrato would really bring out the best in this piece! Just one player to another man. Pls don't bite me. You stuff is pretty killer my guy. Keep rockin! :)

Dave Mustaine has a habit of playing in a tuning he invented himself, a QUARTER step down from E standard. he plays like this because E standard isn't quite heavy enough for the sound he wants but any thing much lower lower than that makes his insanely fast riffs sound really muddy and not right cause its harder to hear them at a lower pitch.

Why can't Mustaine just use a damn tuner in studio? It is so annoying for his tunings to be slightly off.
@xXAscendingPhoenixXx
8 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it was intentional. Megadeth aren't the only band that do alternative tunings, look at Pantera. If it sounds better, then I don't see the problem.
@ThrashRebel
8 жыл бұрын
+xXAscendingPhoenixXx : An alternate tuning is different than a key. Pantera, Soundgarden & many other bands use alternate tunings, but are in a particular key. If you tune by ear (& don't have "perfect pitch") your tuning will be out of key.
@xXAscendingPhoenixXx
8 жыл бұрын
Mark El It's all relative. Keys are just there as a guideline, if something is out of "key", then its off relative to that key but in and off itself is not, if it fits the context. By the time this song was released, it was in their sixth album, so I'm fairly certain they knew what they were doing, and it wasn't because they didn't use a tuner.
@ThrashRebel
8 жыл бұрын
+xXAscendingPhoenixXx: Not really. In a tuning, or scale you have a tonic note/pitch. Say in, the key of "E." Everything in a standard "E" tuning is ralative to the "E" note. If you are tuned to E, E flat or E sharp, you are tuned to that note. There are flats & sharps around notes, but if your tuning is off & you are not in E, E sharp, or E flat, you are somewhere in between those, you are out of tune with that note. it happens all the time. When we would jam in bands I was in, we would pick one person & tune to their open sixth string. if they were off, we were all off together, but in tune with eachother. However, when we recorded, we all used tuners to make sure we were in the "correct" pitch. Other things can play into it, though. If you use reel-to-reel for recording, tape speed can alter your pitch, too. When I went to recording engineering school, we had to calibrate the machine. We had a tape with notes on it & a tuner to ensure tape speed was correct. So, with Megadetg, it could have been that the guitars were slightly out of tune, or the tape speed altered the tuning on playback.
@xXAscendingPhoenixXx
8 жыл бұрын
Mark El Or you're just overthinking this way too much and seem to be missing the point. Regardless, their are no rules that say that a band cannot deviate from tuning to something that people will find "off", if it sounds good or better, then do it.
