Ginger Baker did the same thing with White Room, the intro was different and blah and he made the 5/4 part but never got writing credit for it, and it's at least 1/3 of the song, usually a band may get nervous and decline when a drummer suggests a time change, no NO it's 4/4

I was watching one of his streams, and he was talking favorite licks from Jon Bonham, and he cited many of them coming from Max Roach first. Saw a few of them in this performance

Same here. I hosted him at our store and we had mics on every drum. After the first song, we had cut all of them off. We should’ve known what was coming when he removed several chain links on the bass pedal so the beater was as far away from the head as possible so he could kick it as hard as possible. He was loud asf!

As a studio drummer of several decades myself, I put him next to three of my other primary drum influences, the others being Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen and then Nicko McBrain, but Vinnie had what I'd call more advanced drum fills than all of them except for Peart. So to me, that says a lot, especially for the time frame being the 1980's. Very significant.

Very "melodic" drumming, and indeed, as someone already pointed out, tons of lovely fills, that you can hear much better here than burried in the bed of decibels produced by the other Dio members. Of course, there are many good drummers who can cover this, but it's quite another thing to "invent" all these decorations for the first time. Aping is easy, creating is yet another thing. Good job Vinny !

In my opinion he was probably the best rock drummer of that era. His style is heavy with solid snare chops, similar to Bonham. Sometimes his sound was boxy, but overall he brought a lot of energy and character to his parts with both Sabbath and Dio. He wasn't just there as a background player. I find Tommy Aldridge very stiff and unmusical, and his goal seems to be smashing drum heads as hard as he can. McBain from Maiden clearly has chops. He played at high level before Maiden, but compared to Appice he seems sloppy and not heavy enough.
