I think you have on your picture Auris 23 chromatic lyre- I have this one and this should be tuned G3 to F5 - upper row are strings as "white keys" on the piano.

Thank you so much for the correction. I was using the picture to show how the chromatic strings on the lyre matches the black and white keys on the piano. Your feedback is very helpful. Thank you ❤️

I thought so :) I think that it even could be retuned to other tonation. For you who play the harp I would reccomend to buy lyre with 35-41 strings. In Europa one can purchase lyres "for order" - and Auris has also produced chromatic lyres30 and 35 strings- Those one are difficult to find :( Thomann.de shop can order it for you.

The space between the strings seems narrow on the chromatic lyres, can you play all styles on them ? (picking, gliding... Etc) How hard is it to "upgrade", do you have to practice a long time on the diatonic before considering the chromatic (or is it too different and you have to restart from zero 😅 ?)?

The chromatic lyres are designed to be played using the glide technique. Unlike the diatonic lyres there is a stricter standard of playing which most people follows. I have seen others play it using plucking method but it’s not the best way to play it. Depending on the string orientation of your lyre and the playing method you use you maybe able to adapt or start from scratch. Both hands have specific strings assigned to them. The right hand plays CDFGA strings. The left hand plays EB and the flat and sharp strings. It takes a while longer to get used to the fingering.

Sharon, thx so much! Another very clear video. 👍 So, if one has a diatonic lyre, before playing a piece of music, one has to tune the strings as such to have the flats and sharps, right? But, what if one needs both in the same piece? 🤔 I understood from a person, that one has to play down or up the strings, to get the flats and sharps. Right?

Yes, you got it. A chromatic lyre is like having the piano/keyboard with the black and white keys available to you and so can play flats and sharps readily. To change from one scale to another, you need to tune the strings that needs to be flat or sharp half step up(#) or down(b) to set your lyre in that scale.

I'm not verse enough in the chromatic lyre world to provide but you can look up the lyres from here. antonlyra.com/ Rostislav Anton is well known in the Chromatic Lyre world and makes quality instruments and is able to ship world wide. Keep in mind that these are made to order and you have have a long wait depending on how many orders he has so far.

Hey, I'm thinking to buy 12 strings lyre harp. But zero know how about harp notes and all that. Although i play kalimba. So would pls tell me should i buy 12 string harp or not ? And 12 string will be okay or not because i cant afford 16 or 19 right now.

If you already play Kalimba I would suggest at minimum 16 strings then you can use your Kalimba sheet music and play songs you already know. 10-12 strings will limit the Melodies you wish to play and I feel you will regret this in a short time. It is easier to be patient and start saving now on top of what you already have saved up rather than having to upgrade later.

Hello, I wish to install levers on my lyre is it even possible?
@learningthelyreharp
3 жыл бұрын
It will depend a lot on the size of your lyre crossbar/neck where the tuning pins are and what type of wood is used. There needs to be enough space for the introductions of new bridge pins and tuning levers. I have Cega and Aklot and neither one have enough space to do this so in my case it's not possible. Most modern lyres sold by shops like Amazon, I find don't allow the extra space etiher. Hope this helps.

@@learningthelyreharp I think the only way is to cutting the bar and replace with wider wood for more space for tunning pegs/ bridge and levers. Thank you this helps. 🙏

Do your lyre have a bridge? If yes, you can try what I do. My 27 string lyre is always tuned to F major. Then I use 3 little loose L shaped bridges carved from 10mm dowels to sharpen to convert Bb strings to B whenever I want to play in C major. You just have to calibrate the "sharp" postions once with the tuner and mark them with markers on the sound box. When I need to play rare accidentals, within the piece, I can use my left hand to push the portion of the string below the bridge to sharpen that string while I play with the right hand. Steel strings do have strong tensions but by tuning to A4=432Hz, I can do that without issue. I plan to convert to nylon strings but I can only now find nylon strings available for 19 strings only.

@learningthelyreharp

I'm not sure what you consider cheap is. The most inexpensive chromatic lyre I have come across is the Ausris 23 Chromatic from Germany and it is about $800cad plus duties & taxes. Chromatic lyres are considered professional instruments and are handcrafted by luthiers. I'm saving up for a soprano lyre which are a bit more but it has more range. In the meantime I'm learning what I can on a diatonic lyre using similar techniques for playing Chromatic lyres. Kind of like learning to play piano on a small keyboard while saving up for an actual piano.
