Definitely the precursor to the 🎻, sri ravana created it and he lived in treta yuga which was over 2.5/3 million years ago.

Hari Ram was my teacher for a few months in 2014, and I'm just now finding these excellent videos. They take me back to when I was living in Jaisalamer and spending lunch and dinner at Hari's house, his happy children playing, Shanti making her chapati, smoking biri after biri, and the many many jam sessions we had there. If anyone goes to see Hari, pay him the respect he deserves for a musician of his caliber (and integrity), and tell him that Nathan says hello!

Hi Nathan, Really good to hear of your times with Hari, and yes, he and his family are wonderful people and deserve a lot more than they receive. l looked into helping them build a two room music school there but the logistics proved hopelessly complicated. However it is something l will try to pick up again in the future days. Where about are u based btw? lf u r in the UK it would be great to meet up and play the rawanhathas together. l am in London.

So the two main strings are the tonic and the sympathetic strings are tuned to the major scale... You could also tune them to the notes of whatever raga your playing too no?

These instruments are made by the master musician and makers Hari Ram, Bhopa, who lives in the Kalakar Colony/Artists colony which is situated at Sunset Point on the edge of Jaisalmer town in Northern Rajasthan. It is best to purchase a hand made instrument from Hari ram as the cheaper versions are unsatisfactory sound quality wise and fall apart very quickly. Hari will custom build an instrument for you at a fair price. l have played one of his instruments for 12 years now and it's in excellent condition.

This instrument definitely originated in the Sind region of Rajasthan. It was taken by travelling groups of gypsy musicians who eventually settled in Eastern Europe. It eventually became modified to become what we know as the Western violin. It remains as one of the most under-rated musical sounds for reasons unexplained by those who play the instrument and ethno musicoligists.
