A few years ago a friend asked me to help him improve his six sam deck. The first thing I did was sit with him and discuss "So what makes this deck strong, and what does it want to achieve". Then I told him to throw out all cards that didn't help making Shi-en and supporting it, and to start with 3 Smoke Signal, RotA and 3 Upstart (Still at 3 back then) to make the deck as consistent as possible. He instantly objected to this idea, his argument being he wouldn't put upstart in his deck because "Six sams are cool and strong, and upstart is a poor guy begging for a card, he wasnt going to beg for cards in his awesome sam deck". He was also very hesitant to not play atleast one copy of most samurais, cause they fit the theme and he liked the lore alot. He also wanted to win and get my help to improve his winrate really badly. He really listened to my advice and understood it, but just couldnt get himself to make those changes. That's when I realized some people just have different priorities/different ways to have fun.

Reminds me of this guy that wanted my help (Also Six Sam deck) and he'd reject every tip I gave him and would usually retort with "Yeah but in this super specific scenario it's good" At the same time he was the kind of guy that would play a deck "just for fun" but would also grab his phone and play on that instead if he was playing against a slightly better deck, and then go on a tangent about how he never wins

As someone wanting to play Muskets when this is all over, this speaks to me greatly. The fact that they have their entire backrow as handtraps and a 2 card combo for 10,000 damage and gets by Nibiru is great, but the deck being super normal summon reliant hurts a lot. Hoping for more legacy support someday in the future. Maybe in the form of an FMJ rounds theme card that gets past targeting and destruction protection (even just to be thematically fitting).

Extremely disappointed you didn't talk about one of, if not, the most important thing: Be confident in your deck and what it does. Pretty much all rogue decks formed because an innovative person saw something broken the deck had in a given format before anybody else did and performed well. If you don't have faith in your own innovations you aren't going to do very well.
@nnnp634

He said you need to use deck which has a good interaction with meta. Having faith, sleeping well, being focused, eating well etc. are important but applicable to any deck, even any situation in life so I don't see the point in talking about in this specific video
@Quickbobhero

@@Quickbobhero First, rogue is something which is played or has been played, just not as much as meta. For example, Altergeist are rouge, arguable Dinos even, not Ice Barrier, so you'll also have lists to consult. If you're going to blindly netdeck, you'll lose even with the meta. And even if we suppose that you are making something completely new, yes you need to believe a bit more, but you also have to sleep a bit better, be a bit more focus etc, but as I've said that are completely generic advice which should be addressed in a video about generic advice, not in this one

I've been seeing decks like Muskets and Unchained (both in which I like very much) and I know they have potential, but I just didn't think that I could unlock it. Seeing this video and that people really can beat the meta and change the format with a deck that's 2 or 3 years old is really motivating, and I'm thankful Joshua was willing to do this podcast to teach us about it. I'm a magic player first. When people want to build a rogue deck I always give two pieces of advice. 1) Play cards which trade up easily. For example currently in standard Dreams of Oil and Steel is a $0.05 card. But you get to look at the opponents card and discard a $100 card from it. 2) Fast and unexpected wins are scary. When all else is in doubt make your deck faster.

A pure, more fusion-focused build can be very successful but unfortunately none plays it that way. You have many 2 card combos (1 card if it is Copernicus) to a Caes6r + Sieg, with Gil and scales for recovery. Caes6r is 2 Solemn Warnings going first and while it isn't as powerful as many meta endboards, it can provide enough disruption to end their turn. Going second, instead of Ash etc, you focus on DRNM, Radian, Chaos Hunter to either nullify their board or force them to not extend that much, then High Geng can destroy backrow decks (he has Spell/Trap OPT negation) and Kali Yuga can neutralize everything (except counter traps on his summon), while Kaiser is an OTK machine. I would suggest you try Caes4r, King Tell (as extenders in the extra), along with Pendulum Rising and a pendulum lvl6 in the main. Then if you like that approach, try to have at least 4 lvl4 pendulum monsters (2 orthros 2 copernicus) in addition to a berfomet (he needs work, but is amazing on both xyz and synchro plays) and experiment with Wavering-Eyes (when DD arc is released it will be much better) Also i King Reiji can freeze handtraps for a turn, so if you open Slime/Copernicus you can easily avoid nibiru etc. (people forget Caes6r negates nibiru due to the fact that if you burn your "small" Gengs early you limit the plays of the synchro build greatly)

for the lunalight example, the thing is, it hurts seeing a deck that was meant to be a fusion OTK archetype, seeing its main cards used as an XYZ break ma board builds ... so yeah people probably are right, but it was definitely not the danger who won the YCS but the power of the furries

Actually blackwings are not bad at all if your opponent doesn’t play or don’t have Nibiru in hand you can go for infinite negate and actually win. Have done it on some online tournaments recently

I get when people calling a deck which consist of 3 BA a BA deck, that people get mad about it. Because at that point it is not a BA deck, but a deck using a BA engine. Just like this past ppg weekend, a KZitemr named my eldich deck for karakuri, just because I had 3 in main and 3 in side (people got anoyoid by that) which I totally agree with. so the problem is more if the deck name is an engine or cards from the actuel archtype.

I agree with every point, but I want to explain why, in my opinion, lunalight orcust and lunalight r4nk spam have so much hate for his nature of a non-pure deck. Lunalight is a deck that is born like a fusion going second deck, that can easily face established board and otk. Is beautiful when someone finds new combination and exciting build and win or top with that. But when this new combo become tier 1 and it destroy the core of a deck....that's no more funny. And the worst it's when everyone is netdecking the same deck list and doing the same combo. Lunalight it became a deck with a brainless combo uses always the same cards. A combo with no recovery, no strategy and the only purpose to lock out your opponent from the play. We see it with azathot, but even after the ban of that card, the new strategy of the deck was: lambda, dweller, redooer, gamma in hands and some other handtraps. I hated those cancer versions of lunalight. I like that the deck have ways to go first and a versatility that other fusion decks only dream of...but I would have liked if the heart of the strategy was remained the fusions.

Before eclipse wyvern got banned and guardragons we're released my chaos dragons we're a brutal rouge deck, also ninjas can be quite nasty if you run them properly, you can easily flood the board and do some horrible combo's, especially in master rule 5

So I do want to make one comment regarding snooty rogue purists. Yes its stupid to limit your deck and what it can do because you want to try and stay true to the design and not bring in extra cards that are more popular that don't necessarily fit with the archetype. That's just unnecessary. That being the case, I do think that making a meta deck, and adding rogue cards to it, does not suddenly make the deck a rogue deck. For example - and I'm not even sure if Blue-eyes would be considered rogue - making a "blue-eyes deck" where you don't actually use blue--eyes for anything, don't want to draw him, and when you get him you just want to go into a link play or a rank 8, means you did not make a blue-eyes deck, you made a different kind of deck that happened to have blue-eyes in it. The concept could also be attributed to other archetypes and strategies that aren't meta. I'm not going to say that I'm as knowledgeable as either of you on the subject, but I do think that is a noteworthy reason for people to get snooty.

Blackwings can do a lot of stuff. You have the infinite negate combo which is semi-consistent, you have the option to play with Simoon, locking you into DARKs but giving you the best starter card, and you have the option of running a very pure build focused on spamming birds onto your field and ending with Cyber Dragon Infinity and stuff. And then, you can also easily go second.

Yeah a lot of these are why I play glads It’s one of my favorite strategies, it’s a toolbox so the deck core while bigger than salads is still pretty small therefore you can fill the rest up with meta hate, retiari’s effect is amazing vs. eldlich I don’t think the deck is tier 1 or tier 2 worthy, but with the right pilot and right build it can definitely take a top32 at regionals

david marshall I saw it, but that feels to me more like world chalice with extra steps and while I get what the doods saying I do feel retiari is great against eldlich and equeste is just free recursion I think pure glads with a bunch of extenders andal searchers and disruptions built like salads to go 1st and 2nd is the way to go right now especially if you can’t afford the apollousa
