Just wanted to say thanks for the video and this really works great and yes it takes a lot of elbow grease but the end result is really great. Funny thing is I actually did this with the forks still on the bike and the front wheel off. I just stuck a 5 gallon bucket with water under the fork legs one at a time and with the wheel off they will rotate so it worked great. I am refurbishing an old 1979 GL1000 Goldwing.

after watching your video I went ahead and followed your technique. I was a bit doubtful weather my knackered beaten forks on the xl250s would come to much but boy was I wrong. after two evenings working through the grades of wet and dry and buffing using an electric drill and buffing attachment my forks look like chrome ! yes , there are a couple of small dents I was unable to get out but the transformation is staggering. thank you so much for some good honest advise.

One thing that will make your sandpaper more manageable is to cut your sandpaper into smaller sections and fold it over, use one side until the grit is not cutting anymore and turn over and use the other side, you can get in to the tighter areas this way. If you want to polish your forks on the bike you can use the same procedure but get yourself a cone type polisher attachment that fits on your drill, you can get buffing compound in different grits. I finish off with Mothers Aluminum polish. Then a couple of times a year I will polish forks with the Mothers Polish, it only takes minutes to keep it looking good. I personally like the look of polished aluminum better than chrome.

That "coating" you mention can be an anodizing process called bright dip. Bright dip can be easily stripped using oven cleaner. Apply the oven cleaner to the bright dip and it will loosen up. Go over it to remove the loose material with a Scotchbrite pad and your usually left with a smooth flat finish ready for polishing. Be cautious if your wheels are on as they may be bright dipped as well and will be stripped by overspray from the oven cleaner.

I heard that from the factory, they have a clear coat over the aluminum. So by doing this, all that clear coat is stripped. Do I need to put that clear coat back on?
@snakepliskin1185

They will corrode pretty quickly if exposed to high humidity without a coating. Alodine would be ideal and you could even paint the outside surfaces after that.

Howdy Gene, thank you for your video, keep up the good work. I was taught to get the most out of my paper by tearing a big sheet in half (the short way) then folding that in thirds (like a try-fold wallet) . You then end up with two hand size sanding blocks with three fresh sanding surfaces. The benefits are 1- you only get half your paper wet at one time so it doesn't get mushy and tear too quickly. 2- you are able to utilize more of the grit because you have more edges to the paper. and 3- by folding the paper into thirds you decrease knuckle joint and fingertip pressure spots resulting in a more even sanding of a surface ; especially flat surfaces. I tear the big sheet by first folding it grit side in , then pinching the fold with my thumb and index finger and gently creating a crease, then, using my fingernails to pinch the crease I pull my pinched fingers along the crease and make it more sharp. Next I flatten out the sheet and bend it back on itself so the grit side is out; then with a pinching action I make that crease as sharp as i can with out wearing out my skin. Fold the sheet back and forth two to three times using your fingernails to pull across the crease on the paper side and your fingertips on the grit side. Finally I place the sheet on a table or counter or bench with the grit up and the crease at the edge (the sharper the corner the straighter the tear) and the other half of the paper dangling down to the floor. Put your hand firmly on the paper on the table close to the edge, use your other hand to grab the dangling side and slowly tear your sandpaper in half.
