Damn you guys, I do this for a living, but still watch this video atleast once a year

The edges do not need to be refinished. There are no scratches and etches inhibiting the shine. However, the edges were polished using the polishing powder. We did not forget the sealer, this was a refinishing demonstration. Sealing the surface to soon would be irresponsible. Also a highly polished travertine is essentially non-porous and requires very little sealer. Thank you for your comment.

No, the first grit was 220. While 220 is aggressive enough to remove scratches and etches it will not remove the fill from the travertine. Some weak fill may come out. The floor can be filled. We will have a video of this process coming.

Results look good. I need to figure out how to do this myself. My stupid home builder put some type of sealant on top of my travertine (office and bedroom) and now it looks like total hell I think because there's a thick layer of sealant on top that's totally scratched up.

Ted, thank you so much for the great video. I am going to buy all the products you recommend. Two questions: for the each of the grits before you get to the polish, what was on the floor, just water? Or water with some chemical/product? Question 2: in one answer below you mentioned a 3M buffing pad - is that what you used for the 5X powder phase?
@tedmcfadden
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, we use just plain water during our diamond refinishing phase. I use a 3M white polishing pad for use with the 5X. You buy the diamonds at www.easystonecare.com as well as the 5X. I purchase the 3M polishing pads from my local janitorial. If you need more comprehensive online training you can find it at stonecareedu.com Thank you for your message. I appreciate it.

We find that going to 1800 and even 3500 will create more predictable success over a wider range of stones, use less powder, have less orange peel, and provide an overall better result for the customer. That being said, yes. We could have polished this with 5X after 800.

Ted, you mentioned that this job could have been done even faster. What could have been done differently to speed it up? Here's what I found by watching the video: 1) 220 grit: 1 set vertical passes, 1 set diagonal passes 2) 400 grit: 1 set vertical passes, 1 set horizontal passes, 1 set diagonal passes 3) 800 grit: 1 set vertical passes, 1 set horizontal passes, 1 set diagonal passes 4) 1800 grit: 1 set vertical passes, 1 set diagonal passes 5) 5x powder: about 7 minutes on each 30 sqft. What would you have done differently to speed up? Thanks
@tedmcfadden

To speed this up, 1800 needs only one pass and the entire surface could have been polished with 5X in about 15 minutes.

@juniorlovescars The floor does not become worn up against the walls or island, so the work is done to blend into that area. During the final polishing it is performed to the wall which blends in everything without leaving any noticeable stopping points. Also, we do not seal polished travertine like this, there is a extremely low chance of actual staining. I do not believe it is worth the time or money to seal this floor. Honed however, would be a more appropriate surface to seal.

Yeah, its just amazing what you can accomplish with large amounts of money, time, machinery, manpower, skill, correct tools, correct supplies, talent, labor, management, and organization, and determination. That's all you need. Ya made it look real easy there bud. And for a price that only equals about what the installation cost initially.

The cost of refinishing travertine is less than 20% of replacement.
@EasystonecareCalifornia
8 жыл бұрын
+dbez The cost of everything used in this video can be purchased used, minus the diamonds and polishing powder, is around $600-ish. If you want to invest in brand new equipment to start refinishing stone for a living, you can get started for around $5k. As far as the cost, you are in another galaxy. As Ted said, about 20% of the cost of replacement in this case.

Ted, What is the "Waterproof Tape" you are using for masking? I tried many types of tapes and none of them seems to actually do the work. As soon as they get wet they either come off or become paint removers (even though they don't harm paint when dry)... I've used the pre-taped plastics over and under Stucco-tape. Duct-tape, other Masking tapes, etc. Thanks.
