Some late-to-the party tips: - Prep-wise: Dry socks - you're going to want dry socks. Do your laundry, like she said; & it may be worth going to the Walmart or somewhere & buying a bunch of cheapie tube socks. - Lock deicer is sold in candy-bar sized canisters at gas stations & in auto departs in many stores. If water gets into your door lock & then freezes, it can stop you getting into your car. The lock deicer spritzes a little deicing fluid into the lock & can save the day. (Pro tip: take lock deicer with you when you lock the car to go somewhere - it's no fun to be locked out & gazing longingly at your lock deicer sitting on the dash.) - Fingerless gloves are great for writing or other finicky finger stuff when it's cold. They're sold that way, or they can be created with a pair of cheap fleece gloves & a pair of scissors (for best results, remove fingers from gloves first).

Yep. Storms can come up quickly. Great advice all round. Something I learned years ago is when I can't get to the laundry to do up small things, I put them in a container with water and soap, seal and shake, wring out and repeat without the soap. The other is to have a box/pkg. of disposable undies handy for emergencies. They aren't pretty but they suffice for a few days. Happy snacking.

Just wanted to tell you a hint for keeping your bed warmer, or your floor in the van or even your winter shoes and boots. It’s a pretty cheap fix, portable, removable, customizable for whatever reason. All stores like Lowes/home depot carry interlocking closed cell foam floor pads, in those stores they are usually in packages of 5/6 and are about 4 square feet and 1/2 inch thick. They are OUTSTANDING insulators ! Every year I use those pads, cut to fit to go inside my winter boots and another set inside my slippers. Yes, they are snug for a couple hours, but it squishes down fairly fast and is very easy on your feet. And warm ? Oh yes, they are incredibly warm, instantly. If your bed is still cold, put them under your mattress. I noticed in one of your videos before you got a van you were trying to stay warm in your bed. This would have helped immensely.

if you get "dry fit" underwear it's easy to wash it in a sink or bucket with some Dawn dishwashing detergent...dry it under the hand dryer or rotate with another pair while it dries in the van...really all van life clothing should be the modern dry fit fabrics, that way you can wash anywhere and drying is not an issue

I live northeast of Houston. Luckily in the winter storm, I only lost power for about 12 hours and it was during the day. The sun was shining so when I got really cold, I sat in front of my glass storm door and soaked in the sun as my house faces south. It definitely was cold!!!

I live in snow country, so we're much better equipped for it, but I've got a couple of tips. If you're having to park on a street, you might be in the way of the snow plow. If it has to go around you, it will leave a high bank of snow around your vehicle, making it hard to open the doors and get out. A lot of our towns simply don't allow street parking at night from November to April because of snow removal needs. I don't know how that played out in Dallas though. Related to that, I would hesitate staying in my vehicle during a storm because of how snow accumulates on the vehicle. Again, under especially severe conditions, it might be hard to open the doors. Sometimes the door mechanisms freeze. While I own several of those ice scrapers/brushes for clearing snow off of my car, I prefer to use a corn broom after a heavy fall of snow because it's bigger, stronger, and has a longer reach. And, most importantly, unlike our ice scrapers, they can be bought in stores just about anywhere. I'm super experienced in winter driving, which means I don't go anywhere when the roads are slick, icy, or snow-covered. Not even with winter tires.

Having lived in TX through these ONCE in life Deep Freeze 5 Times , a trap sized for ur van can b Thrown over as follows . 6 1qt plastic bottles , fill with h2o , tie heavy string around neck couple times , other end of string (10 ft at least) attached to each grommet of onre side of trap . throw 1 bottle at time over van & pull part way overn repeat each bottle . Grommet tarp down tight . Leave one front door lightly covered . Front cab area divide with heavy plastic covering heavy blanket to separate cold from heated area. Been there done it. Full fuel tank always

A good, solid long handled ice scraper, preferably with a brush on one end is a great thing to have. Also a cover for your windshield. I’ve seen ones that also cover the side view mirrors. Much easier to pull the ice/snow off your windshield when taking the cover ( or a tarp) off than having to scrape. Especially if your van is tall and you’re on the short side

HI, About a few years ago, they came out with this folding ladder and it folds up and can fit into a small space. It was made for camping and taking it with you. I think Amazon has them... not sure though.. their not that expensive.
@celesteschoolcraft691

I just bought a travel trailer and everyone were in an uproar because of the snow and ice storms we got hit with on the Eastern side, we had severe power outages and it was a mess, trees were down on powerlines, the campground I am at lost power and the well water that services all of us went out, no pump of course, and I had prepared like everyone else here in the campground did, pool noodles and a foam board cut to size for outside storage doors and where the slide out underneath will allow major drafts to come in, I sealed those areas and then made sure my propane tanks were filled up and I bought a Mr. Heater and extra 1 lb cans of propane and an extra15 lb tank and hose, because I could only get 10 of those small cans. When I moved in my converter charger went bad and for 2 weeks that it took to get a brand new one I went on Amazon and got a bucket heater, portable generator and solar panels, a rechargeable portable shower handle and the pump, and I also already had a busted sink pipe so I had to stock up on 2.5 gallons of bottled water. I also have an SUV and have an inverter an battery jump box and all that good stuff and was like Da Weasels (two ferrets) and I are going to bunker down in here, I cut bubble wrap to fit my windows to add insulation and when the power went out everyone was calling me going come on over here. Like, yeah, that is a hard NO do you see what it is doing out there, we are in the green here! I was not gonna risk trying to drive even with brand new tires and chains, nope! so I stayed in my trailer, went out recharged my house battery through my SUV, also charged the solar generator when it was getting low I think only 2 times I needed to charge that one and being that my furnace runs off of the house battery and propane I kept it at 50 degrees ran the propane heater and just wore sweat pants and hoodies, I even took two showers in the 60 hours I was without power and then another when the power was back on with bottled water and heating the bucket with the bucket heater because the water was brown from the well pump coming back on, I would recommend an outside RV water filter even if you only use a hose to fill your tank, keep that on your fill hose. I also have a compact 6 lb portable washing machine that will help with washing the underwear, bras and socks. I also have a bigger washer, but I did not use either of those, thankfully I washed everything before the storms hit. food wise, I ate cereal in the a.m., soup which only takes about 5 minutes to heat on the gas stove and then dinner stuff like spam and corn beef hash that only takes a couple minutes to fry up, oh and instead of water to drink, lots of Gatorade, clear sodas and tea, I used my 12 volt tea kettle to heat water for tea. Da Weasels were and still are my main source of entertainment they are only 4 months old and I spent a lot of time either training them, playing with and cuddling with them and they had no problems and stayed warm and comfortable through three nasty storms, though the third one was not as bad with the power it was only off for 5 hours comparted to 10 hours the first time, 60 the second time and then 5 the last time.
