A huge bonus with BIN shellac primer is that it sands like a dream. I use it anytime I want a perfectly smooth top coat, especially if I am spraying over it. It dries quickly, sands effortlessly, and produces factory finishes on trim, doors, etc
@csimet
3 ай бұрын
Agreed. I use it to not only prime stained/varnished wood, but also bare wood... cabinets, trim, etc. that I make from scratch. It is the best primer you can get IMHO and does not raise the grain like water based primers. Two coats (first soaks in) and light sanding between before the top coat produces a super smooth & durable finish. Not cheap at ~$75/gal. here in the US, but worth every penny.

Great video. I’m decorating a house with lots of trim that has turned yellow (maybe oil based paint), and some walls with staining. I was considering buying Cover Stain but I’m worried about cure times as the project needs turning around quickly. Also, does BIN or Cover Stain go yellow and risk bleeding through the top coats? Recommendations?

Of course knotting solution or sanding sealer are a mix of shellac and spirits. You can make your own with shellac granules and meths. Which is actually the same as the base components of BIN with its shellac, spirits and then of course the pigment so you don’t really need to use knotting fluid before BIN but that is belt and braces
@Leroyy536

Correct Bin is pigment and shellac, shellac has a shelf life, best to make your own knotting as needed.

I think Zinsser BIN is great although I have a couple of painter friends who hate it but as you know it's not easy to use unless you know whay you're doing and I have found that knotting isn't used often enough because those knotts are a pain for bleeding through, I normally just spot the knotts in first on bare wood and then zinsser bin over the full area but the knotting is just as good if not better for knotts
