Winter time is the best time of year to can oranges! They’re always on sale, and they’ll be a nice bright and fresh burst of sunshine flavor to enjoy during the cold dark months.
I got 2lb bags of halo oranges on sale for $3.99. This fall they were $9 a bag, so thisbis a big savings for our family.
I had to adjust the recipe I used midway through, but that’s okay!
Depending on the size of your oranges, and how many you can fit into your jars, you may need to increase the amount of syrup you make.
I used 1 1/2 C honey for 4c water. For 7 quarts, I used about 9lbs of halo oranges (mandarin oranges). I had to make more syrup to accommodate that many oranges as the original recipe called for 6lbs.
If you don’t want to use honey, use 2C white granulated sugar per 4c water.
Process in your water-bath canner for 10 minutes or increase to 15 minutes for higher elevation.
Have you canned oranges before? This was my first time! The great thing about canning, is once you know the basics you can preserve just about anything!
