This is a great video because it highlights some of the most important, interrelated causes of drowning: fear, panic and thrashing about. When people are afraid in the water, they too often put their hands straight up into the air in an effort to call for help. If you try try putting your hands straight up into the air in a pool, you'll see that it make your body the shape of a needle and it causes you to go straight downward, just like a needle dive. The video's true: backfloaters float.

I have a fear of the lifeguards at swimming pools. I like to swim underwater for a long time, but I'm afraid they'll think I'm drowning. But then if I was to get into a drowning situation they might not know. (the boy who cried wolf situation) I think I'll just stick to swimming above water so there isn't any confusion.
@Adraxone
8 жыл бұрын
You're lucky if they're that protective. When I was 6, I didn't know how to float and tread water. I didn't look at the signs telling me how deep it is and jumped into 5.5 feet deep part of the pool. The lifeguard just stared at me for about 4 seconds before trying to help me. That was the last time I went to the hotel my relatives said were "high quality and had great service"
@JadeCaro
7 жыл бұрын
The lifeguard might've thought you could swim since you just jumped into the deep side with signs on them. It would be a problem if they jumped on you when you were just trying to have fun swimming. They looked at you to see if you were ok before jumping to any conclusions and since you weren't they went and saved you. It's not like they knew you couldn't swim from the start

I swim as much as a kilometer into the ocean and back, swimming for as much as a personal record of six hours at a time. Floating on my back gives me a no-energy-required alternative when I'm low on energy. I can float on my back for an hour, regardless of how deep the water is. Knowing that I can float on my back prevents panic. And not panicking prevents me from drowning. If you can't float on your back, learn! Take a YMCA class. It could save you life if you're dumped in the water.

This video makes so much sense. Panic causes people to do things that are self-destructive. When people are afraid in water and panic, they thrash, which causes water to get into their mouths and hastens the very tragedy they are trying to avoid: drowning. I disagree about one part. Do you know why they advise people to swim in pairs? It's because it would be so sad for you to drown all by yourself.

@dogfan4lyfe I'm one of those who can't float *naturally*, due to high bone or muscle desity/low fat or whatever. But I can still float quite well by keeping some air in my lungs all the time (and just cycling some of the air out as i breathe), and doing a gentle flutter kick as i float. If I don't do this, my legs sink and eventually my face goes under.

@bicnarok I must say for being in chemistry honors that's a pretty fail answer. Fat is mainly adipose tissue, which is essentially loose tissue. In pure water, you'd probably sink a bit. In most water, such as sea water, you'd be able to float. Of course, since you also have water and air, that helps you in your floating process too (the biggest contributor is actually the air). The tissue itself will sink, but because it's almost ALWAYS accompanied by air filling the pores, it will float.

Isn't it true that some people can't float naturally and will sink if they don't know how to keep themselves close to the surface?
In Kindergarten i was doing swimming lessons and we had to go to the 5 ft part and to jump in. I went down and it was like i was invisible to the swim teacher because she just kept on helping other kids get back up. I don't know how but i was floating without being on my back and i was just standing there floating without anything keeping me up. Until the lifeguard finally noticed me. I hated her after that.

@bicnarok Fat is fat and oil is oil, fat is not oil. Fat is a saturated substance with no double bonding between the molecules where as oil contains double bonds between the molecules allowing it to become an immiscible layer on the surface of the water.You are probably thinking of fatty acids which is different as they can come in a range of unsaturated or saturated molecules as either fats or oils. This is basic chemistry.
