0:00 - 0:25 - How to prevent hernia recurrence?
Hello everyone. In our video series on recurrent or failed hernias, let us see this patient about how do you prevent your hernia repair from failing? How do you decrease the chance of recurrence following a hernia repair? So there are certain precautions if one follows the chance of a hernia repair to succeed is very high.
0:26 - 0:38 - Avoid heavy weight lifting
Avoid lifting heavy weights of straining very early following a hernia operation. Generally we advise at least three months of avoiding heavy weight lifting following a hernia surgery.
0:39 - 0:54 - Quit Smoking
Quit smoking. Smokers are known to have a poor quality of scar tissue and smoking drastically increases the risk of a hernia repair to fail no matter what sort of repair or a mesh has been used.
0:55 - 1:05 - Diabetes control
For patients who have diabetes, a good control of blood sugar definitely will help in building up the quality of the scar and making the hernia repair succeed.
1:06 - 1:38 - Watch your weight
Obesity so avoiding obesity or avoiding gaining excess weight following a hernia repair definitely helps. Because when one gains a lot of weight, there is a lot of stretch on the abdominal wall and that can lead to a failure of the repair. So generally after a hernia operation patients might get into complete bed rest, keep eating without physical activity and that can increase a lot of weight. This should be avoided and one has to watch one’s weight following a hernia repair to prevent recurrence.
1:39 - 1:54 - Avoid excessive coughing
Avoiding excessive coughing. So if one gets excessive coughing due to some lung infection or allergic problems one has to get it treated immediately because excessive coughing can cause weakening of the scar.
1:55 - 2:46 - Pro Tip
Apart from all these, some patients may also have some specific risk factors which their surgeon who has done the hernia surgery will be aware of and they have to be in regular touch with the surgeon on regular follow up to take those specific precautions to prevent hernia from failing. A good diet with a high protein diet is a definite help in improving the quality of scar tissue and the muscle tissue and this also decreases the chance of hernia from recurring. If one follows all these precautions the chance of a hernia operation succeeding is very high.
