Do NOT use silica packs in your shoes or boxes. They dry your shoes out. It's overkill unless the shoes are damp to begin with. Just store then in a dry place. The more humid or damp the more you stand the risk of mold.

See I’d have to disagree. In some places where humidity gets high they are needed. Where I currently reside, in the summer the humidity is through the roof where as there has been times I would pull out a sneaker to find the aroma of mildew. Never came to the point where you see it but if you can smell it , then it is present. This is when the silica packs are needed. I usually give them a cleaning, let dry and throw a few into the boxes and that solves my problem for the summer. Now the way you store your sneakers also matters , I usually keep my shoes stored in there original boxes in hazardous waste ziplocks with holes punched into them so they can somewhat breath but because sneaker boxes have so many holes/gaps there is constant air and moisture seeping it’s way into the sneakers so the silica packs absorb all that extra moisture while not completely drying out the shoe as it always has constant air flow. The only downside for this is they have to be changed regularly. NOW if you seal up your sneakers in containers or ziplocks and there is NO AIRFLOW AND you use silica packs , then that’s when it starts to become overkill . The silica pack will pull whatever air/moisture is left within that sealed environment and it will begin to slowly destroy your sneakers. You ever wondered what those green stickers are in newer sneaker boxes ? The ones that say ycm ? Yea Those literally work the same as a silica packet just in a better new tech form. Any form of moisture wicking material (silica(old) ycm stickers)(new) have always been present and will continue to be present as allot of Nike shoes are manufactured in regions of the world with high humidity so they need something to combat this while they sit in the warehouse years before their release. I didn’t mean to rant though, just wanted to inform you that silica is not necessary bad for the health of your sneakers depending on how you use it.

The best way to prevent problems on shoes in my opinion is to take care of the shoes but you could use methods that might work better

How sad it is to be able to get a pair for retail through all the bs, only then to have to worry about mold growing. And if your paying triple for them, Yeesh!🤦♂️
