Demonstration on how flax is processed from raw flax fibre to flax strick that is ready for hand spinning. The flax fibres are broken by using a flax brake. Then the flax fibres are scutched. This removes the broken outer core of the flax plant. The flax is hackled by running the fibre through different sizes of hackling combs from large to small that remove the short and rough parts of the flax fibre, and separate out the long flax fibres for hand spinning.
I took this flax video during a Spin Flora Workshop that I taught at the AGWSD Summer School 2017. Peter Hoare was kind enough to bring along his flax brake to show us how it is done.
Once the flax has been retted and dried it has to go through a process of rippling( removing the seeds) breaking the outer core of the plant with the flax brake, scutching to remove the broken core and hackling to separate the long and shorter flax fibres.
