On the Swiss lathe I program, setup, and run I've found several self-centering Guhring & Iscar carbide drills that work. If you can get past the inherent narcissism of the tools they seem to be a pretty good option.

Center drills? People still use those archaic things? Even on manual mills, I've been using spotting drills for about 20yrs.

I agree spot drills are the way to go. But there are rare occasions we use center drills, only because they are available in long lengths and sometimes we need to get to a hard to reach spot.

OK, I'll give ya that. But I've noticed these young guys do not always clean the spindle or collet tapers and ya can get enough run-out to break the tip off a small #1 or #2* traditional center drill (*1/8 or 3/16).@@Saul_T_Ballz

Centre drills are specifically for tail stocks on lathes. A spot drill doesn’t create the same ‘interface’ shape allowing for point clearance!

60deg center drills are. They are also available in 100, 90 and 82deg. KEO boxes say combination drill and countersink no matter what deg ya get.@@gazunkafonegazunkafone3492
