Thank you so much for this. I've just got a prometheus pro 1 kiln and looking at how to fit the kiln furniture in there. The shelf it comes with is so tiny (narrow). I was trying to find something I could put in the bottom of the kiln to protect it. Where can I get the ceramic fibre sheet, or slightly larger shelves - does the fibre sheet catch on the wire mesh going in and out, how long does it last or do you need a new one each time you use the kiln, do you need the kiln shelf in there at all if I'm using a trivet that I can put my fork under? So many questions. Thank you again.

My wife has the same kiln.. Someone bad borrowed it (could have been me..) & managed to slop molten lead down between the kiln casing & the front metal case - it's a flaw in these, there's no physical barrier. That molten lead borked the control board circuitry & the display... That same bad person took out the pcb & repaired it because that bad person is alright at electronics... however they also have no clue how the programming works so now they are here trying to learn, to become, erm, less bad..
@jamesward5721
8 ай бұрын
My "Top Tip" is to run a bead of silicon across the bottom of the kiln ope between the metal casing & the heat resistant material - because otherwise if anything hot spills inside the kiln, it runs straight down onto the control pcb & fries it good & proper. Repairing that is then a pita of the highest order.. ask me how I know..
@JoyFunnell
8 ай бұрын
Haha, hope the video helps with the programming anyway! Good luck :D
@JoyFunnell
8 ай бұрын
James when you say silicon what exact material are you referring to? As the kiln can go up to nearly 1000C it needs to be something very heat resistant. :)
@jamesward5721
8 ай бұрын
@@JoyFunnell any old muck will do as that part across the front lower lip doesn't get super-hot, it will just act as a barrier to prevent any spills dropping straight down onto the VERY sensitive PCB that is behind the front display/input buttons directly below the silly gap. Bad design there tbh as there's no physical shield. Molten metal & electronics don't play well together & it's quite a busy little control board.
@jamesward5721
8 ай бұрын
Removing the LCD from the board in order to un-short it is also an absolute sod btw - that sucker is in there forever & will test you out. I got it off the control board eventually & managed to make it play like it did as a child, but it was difficult. If any hot metal/stuff spills onto the kiln floor, it runs forwards, drips over the edge of the ceramic floor & drips straight down onto the plastic display - the plastic display will NOT like this & will sulk, rendering the kiln inoperable mainly as even though the board still works, you won't have any idea what it wants or what you're saying as there's no coherent display. I'm betting that flaw kills more Prometheus kilns than anything else as they're pretty solid bar that one glinch.

Hello! I'm planning on buying this for enameling small pieces (35mm pendants) How much is the heat loss after opening the door and inserting the pendant? Does it recover quickly? The paragon sc2 is the other choice but 4x more expensive.
@JoyFunnell
Жыл бұрын
Hi, if you are only going to be enamelling you could get the Pro 1 without the programmable timer if you wanted. It still has temp control. I use one of those for most of my enamelling. Um.... how much heat loss, well a few variables. What are you putting your piece into the kiln on, the more metal you put in (ie stilt or mesh as well as the piece) the more heat you use to get those things up to temp, plus how long you have the door open for. But in general terms for heat recovery I find the Pro 1 is the quickest, the Pro 1 with programmable controller is a little slower and the SC2 quite a bit slower not least because a bigger door means larger heat loss to start with. If I open the door and put the piece in quite quickly in my Pro 1 set at 800C it will drop to around 760C/770C and gets back to temp in a couple of mins or so. Hope that helps!! :D

@JoyFunnell thank you so much for taking the time to respond. It immensely helped. If i could please bother you for some more input; I am making flat enamel watch dials so my biggest concern is indeed heat recovery and even distribution of heat in the kiln. Dials are very small (about 34mm diameter), and I have noticed that increased heating time tends to warp the metal. I use a thin trivet. With this info...would you say that the prometheus pro 1 without controller is my best bet? Any other kiln that would better suit my needs? I would appreciate any inputs :)
@JoyFunnell
Жыл бұрын
@@theOdin-odin Hi, well I can only speak from my own experience but I think a Pro 1 without the programmable controller would be your best bet. I've been enamelling today with mine so I particularly paid attention to recovery time and it was two mins or less each time when my target temp was set at either 760c or 800c depending on the enamels I was using. I know everyone's method varies. I'm not a full blast and watch like a hawk person as I get too easily distracted!! 😉

@JoyFunnell thank you Joy. I will order that one then! Are you using the kiln with the mica window? Any issues with the window? I like to see my enamels melt as any overheating will cause warpage 😅
@JoyFunnell
Жыл бұрын
@@theOdin-odin The non programmable Pro 1 just has a little hole in the door, no mica window. To be honest mica windows aren't great anyway as you really can't see through them. Of course with my health and safety hat on I should mention (I'm sure you already know but others may not) that looking into a hot kiln is bad for the eyes so use appropriate safety filter glasses ;) This is the type of Pro 1 I mainly use for enamelling. www.metalclay.co.uk/prometheus-mini-kiln-pro-1/

A good question :) You still need to use a program, I have one set for full ramp to 800c and hold for 8 hrs. When I'm done enamelling I just press the start/stop button on the left and then switch the kiln off. By setting for a nice long hold time you know it won't suddenly switch off in the middle of enamelling. Hope that makes sense :D

Ceramic fiber paper and kiln wash are only really necessary if you use glass or enamel, but a thinner version that is really like paper, is nice to use to avoid drag/distortion of metal clay as it shrinks. I hardly ever use it, but it's nice to know about.
