Hello Pete. Although Australian or American English require relaxed facial muscles, I feel that the sounds are very sharp and they ache my ear. How do you explain that?

so in Australian English, you say "ah", instead of how American English say it, like "arrr"?

@@AussieEnglishPodcast I usually have troubles with the contractions in English, the reason is that I don't really focus on them because it's hard on my own, I've watched your video with *20 Things To Never Do In Australia* and I couldn't understand that accent spoken by that *snake catcher* or how you call it so I used the subtitles, but I can keep un with your accent, like 75%+, anyways, stay safe and cheers!

Hey Dragos, great suggestion. I'll think about a video I could make on learning to understand and use contractions. It sounds like the biggest issue here for you is hearing them when spoken. Am I right? The trick for this is definitely going to be listening to content where you know contractions are present and that you're having trouble with understanding them just by listening, and then reading a transcript or subtitles whilst listening. That'll be the key to teaching your brain to hear the contractions. The snake catcher one may be more his broader accent. That's probably again exposure that's the issue. So listening + reading will help here too. Hope that helps!

Hello Peter! I realized after a while looking at the words on the screen that it's best to look at the movements of your mouth. It helped me pronounce it better. It's an imitation actually. And the video quality sure helps a lot in this process. I loved it, thank you so much!

A bit of a humble request from your long-time listener Pete; could you please ask your editing team to stop putting in those animal sounds in your videos that suddenly pop up out of nowhere as they're quite loud compared to the audio level of your voice! hurts my ears every time especially when wearing headphones. As for the quality of the content, you are doing an excellent job, Pete. I hope you the best :)

Do you personally think R and L sounds have any similarity at all? Personally, even though I'm from Japan where most people have trouble distinguishing these two sounds, the only similarity I've been able to find is that they're both voiced. I've never understood how these sounds sound remotely similar to some people since the difference has always been very clear to me ever since I started learning English, and I was wondering if a native English speaker like you has ever understood why some people think they sound similar and whether you personally find them similar.

Personally, as a native english speaker, they've always sounded distinct to me and I can't really see how they're so easily confused. Even the way the mouth formulates the sounds is very different. I.e. The "L" sound is usually formulated by the tongue touching the roof of the mouth behind the teeth, and the "R" sound more-so by the top teeth touching the bottom lip. As a side-note, I've always thought it's kind of interesting how the らりるれろ consonant sound in Japanese is usually romanised with an "R." In my opinion, it shares a lot more similarity with the "L" sound (tongue touching the roof of the mouth) 😅

You write /ae/ and I would write /aɪ/ Phonetic Symbols from IPA are not so international :)))) Americans write them in their own way, British people and Australians too.
