The variety featured in this video is;
Photinia 'Pink Marble'
To propagate Photinia in the uk the best time is in the late spring / early summer.
At this stage of the year the plants are actively growing and putting on plenty of fresh, soft wood, growth. It is the soft wood that are used for propagation material.
Fill a pot with fresh compost and water. Allow about 20-30 minutes for the water to soak into the compost and for the excess to drain out of the pot.
Cut the soft wood stems to about 6 inches in length, just below a leaf joint, removing the lower leaves.
Place the base of the cutting into some hormone rooting compound and then insert the cutting into the compost, lightly firming around the stem.
I place about 5 cuttings in each pot, allowing space between them.
For best results, keep the compost on the moist side and in a slightly shaded position until the cuttings have rooted. Placing the cuttings in a shaded position will help to reduce moisture loss from the leaves due to exposure to the sun.
After about 6-8 weeks the stems should have rooted to give new plants.
