All of my orchids are indoors and they do. Dry well. My water soak day is usually day day early morning and they soak for 15 minutes. I use clay enameled pots that are specifically for orchids, they retain moisture very well. They are expensive but worth it. I only use bark. 😊

Molly - you are a natural as a presenter. Many others on YT could borrow a page from your book: a normal pace of speaking; your voice carries well; clear elocution; a varied vocabulary; good posture and excellent eye contact - not looking all over the place; only the most essential of hand movements; natural and logical progression from point to point in your presentation (no pauses and looking at notes) and last but not least - an obvious passion for the plant world. You would be a shoo-in in television.

Choose an orchid with most of the flowers open and a few blooms. The change in conditions when moving from the grower to the store to your home may cause "bud blast" where all the buds fall off. It's not really common for this to happen, but if it does, you will be happy that you didn't loose all the buds, and if it doesn't, you will still get a pretty good bloom time.

Your voice is very clear and your video is informative. Just some rectification watering with soaking method is really effective, but you should not be immersing the orchid for more than 15 mins and don't do the watering very often. Soaking method works well for those who are lazy about watering.

Thank you for this! I've had orchids for years, but not having a "green thumb" I don't buy them, people just give them to me. I keep them inside until they start to fade, then I go hang them in a tree--where they thrive! But only now, after watching you, do I know how to prune them. I have been letting everything just hang on until it is for sure way a dead branch. I'll try your advice right away. Oh, I live in the tropics (Suriname) so they are fine outside, for them it is natural. I do water them in the dry season, otherwise just let nature do that.

One thing I've not heard mentioned on an orchid care video, despite the 'media' in which they may be in; the environment in which the plant resides. Wether or not the plants are in Miami Beach Flor- ida, or in the Sonoran Desert, Tuscon Arizona. BIG difference.

Is any kind of bark suitable as orchid medium? I bought a huge sack of bark that's meant as groundcover in gardens on flower beds. It looks a bit different to the barks I've seen in orchid potting videos, but the sack does say 'BARK'. I did use it for the orchids already, but not sure if it'll work or does it suffocate the roots.

Hi from the UK🇬🇧. I have 2 orchid plants which had flowers but they have not flowered in the last yr and a half. They both no longer have stems or the stems have been cut short to base of the leaves. Is this the reason why my orchids are not flowering because the stem is not growing? The leaves and roots are fine and they have been repotted but no flowers😰😥
@emiv592
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. This is very helpful, I did not know about the watering method and what to do when it's bloomed out (luckily I'm a little lazy and did not take it out of the plastic pot yet). Just a question, when do they need to be repotted?
@sabriel53
5 жыл бұрын
Repot the orchid if the bark/moss is old. As a rule you should repot bark every 2-3 years and moss every year. Both of them are organic and in time they will start to decompose and create an acidic environment for the roots, which will cause them to rot. If you haven't repotted yet after getting the orchid and the flowers are gone you should get some bark chips and repot the plant (you never know how long it's been in that pot). You shouldn't get a much bigger pot though. If the roots fit insede the old pot just clean it and put the orchid back with fresh bark. They like to be slightly tight in the pot. Good luck

Very clear, thank you, Molly. Some extra information here compared to other videos I've seen on orchids. Nice presentation. Your orchids look very healthy! It's great to know about the two types of potting mixes, as mine is the moss type, and I think I have been consequently giving it too much water! Should any of the roots be exposed to the air? I've read that the roots like light.
@jacobleatherberry
10 жыл бұрын
Kerrie, from what I've been reading, yes, there should be some "air roots" which are a green color. check the firmness of the roots.. if they're firm, they're still alive, but if they're mushy and you get the internal "wire" of the root, it's probably time to repot/cut dead roots. Use scissors sterilized with alcohol as orchids are susceptible to bacteria/viruses/snails.
@KerrieRedgate
10 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, +Jacob Leatherberry ! Valuable information. I had indeed been watering mine too much, and now I just spray the leaves and into the pot and roots with a very, very mild solution of Seasol and filtered water, and it seems to love it. It has finally lost all the blooms, but the roots have been going crazy! They are nicely green and abundant. I also took the clear plastic pot out of its dark green outer pot and have sat it in a wider pot on top of rose quartz chunks inside, so that it is a little elevated and the roots get plenty of light. 2 of the 3 stems are still green, so have cut the dead one off. It has also grown a couple of happy leaves! I've had to move house in the middle of all this, but it seems to be OK. I will remember your advice re the alcohol-sterilized scissors. Thank you!

Kerrie Redgate Usually the orchid would have a tag attached to it. The back of the tag has the care instructions. I have, and had, quite a number of orchids from both popular types (or gift orchids, as some call them). The tags always said not to spray the leaves with water. They suggest watering by putting 3 ice cubes once a week on the bark or moss. As for the soaking that Molly mentioned, I would think it is more than sufficient to do it once a month. I do the soaking once every 3 or 4 months. There is also a special orchid food you may want to consider using once a month, or even less. It should be available at most places that sell the plant. I love orchids.
@KerrieRedgate
9 жыл бұрын
Sam Googlian Thank you, Sam. Though, I'm not keen on the ice cubes, as it seems so far away from the naturally warm habitat of orchids. I've actually found the plant does better if I spray the leaves lightly. As I work from home, I spray the plant and roots lightly several times a day to mimic the rainforest environment. And I have two long stems with blossoms now. The original long stem has bloomed again. But this is also the hotter season in Sydney, so I will gauge the plant's response in colder weather. I have found with my other house plants that each plant, even of the same variety, has its own "personality" and reacts to conditions quite differently. Yes, orchids are very special plants!
@Sharp_Mann

Kerrie Redgate Thanks Karrie. That's all that matters (if it is working for you). 2 of mine (one white and one purple) have 3 stems each. 5 to 6 flowers on each stem, but one of the stems (with gorgeous, large, white flowers) has 8 of them. :) .. Enjoy your orchids.

Question! I’ve had a couple orchids and everytime they bloom very nicely then the stem seems to turn brown- almost stick like… should I remove them? Also the green foliage at the bottom is still very healthy and a nice green but no new shoot has came up in the past few months. Is it a lost cause? Or is there soemthing I can do to help a new one bloom? Also do I need to keep repotting them as they get larger?
