When I started following your channel, Sr. Chief, I did some stoichometric research on AR and I didn’t understand why you added the nitric in increments, but I reasoned that because you are the expert for these processes, you knew something not greatly discussed on the interweb. I just stumbled on this video and NOW I get it. Thank you for your entertaining instruction! 👍👍👊👊

I have bought some gold covered pins on EBay. Hopefully they will be ok for my first attempt.
@sreetips
6 жыл бұрын
Gold covered pins are gold plated. There is a very thin coating of gold over a base metal. Usually brass or copper, but sometimes steel. Steel will not dissolve very well in nitric acid. Use a magnet to see if you have steel or brass as base metal. In any case, the amount of gold will be very small. And you must use a sulfuric acid stripping cell to deplate the gold. It would be a hard first-time experiment to pull off. I've done milspec pins by dissolving the base metal (nonmagnetic brass) with hot dilute nitric acid, then dissolving the resulting gold foils in aqua regia, but it took a long time and used much acid. Good luck with your refining experiments.

Hi Sreetips.... I am wondering if you could have added more distilled water to reduce the nitric acid some as you would dilute the solution some and then add the SMB. Just wondering if you could have lessned the amount of SMB used. Thanks for the great video.
@michael3263
6 жыл бұрын
Interesting approach. You can reclaim some of that nitric acid by bubbling the nitrogen dioxide through water and then distilling to concentrate it. It won't get all of it but that would allow you to recycle some of your nitric acid.

(Incremental nitric dosing to dissolve gold) and (inquarting the gold with silver then parting with nitric acid) are the two most beneficial things that I have ever learned in my gold refining experience. Sometimes I over shoot with the nitric. When I do, I never use urea. Instead, I use sulfamic acid to kill excess nitric. Sulfamic acid is tile cleaner from Home Depot, about $8 for a pound.
@georgehollowell5000
5 жыл бұрын
That is good to know about the sulfamic acid. I can use urea as I already have about 2 lbs of it that I inherited. Have you ever done a video on the environmentally safe way to dispose of spent chemicals? I am not a chemist and am worried about waste chemical disposal.

Sreetips, your videos couldn’t be better! Thank you for such solid and straightforward tutorials! A real quick question though… I have a batch of AR with placer Gold and Mercury in Solution. I’ve denoxed the AR w/ Sulfamic Acid and diluted w/ 3x water by volume to precipitate and filter any silver. Game plan is to drop AU w/ SMB as usual. After filtering to recover AU my understanding is that I can precipitate Mercury w/ Lye (Sodium hydroxide) to Mercury Oxide. Then Dry and use strong heat to drive off the oxygen to re-claim my liquid Mercury. Does that sound accurate for pulling this off, or is there a better route?
