Good video jerry. Is there any tip / trick you can share on sanding around the edges of door handle and belt moulding when I’m masking them on low budget jobs instead of r&i. Thanks.
@LakesideAutobody
Жыл бұрын
Don't sand around the handles or trim until it is masked - then use a scuff pad. You can get it right to the tape line with a scuff pad. If you have to do body work right next to the handle it's a different story, but it is possible to leave the handle on and do minor body work such as chips, light rust, etc :)

What about masking between the door jams to avoid overspray in between ?

You'll want to do that for sure. You can use paper/tape or 2" tape. Also, trunk and hood jambs. Good comment :)

To see it done would make a good video. A lot of others use a foam tape. Is there any way around having to use that stuff (another added expense)?
@LakesideAutobody
2 жыл бұрын
@@Newfoundlander86 You don't have to use foam tape. You can just use regular masking tape and auto body masking paper. That's a good idea for a video - I appreciate the idea. If you are concerned about a tape line you can "back mask" which can be tricky in a door jamb but does cut down on leaving a hard line. I don't have a video on that but will make one of those too :) Sorry I don't have any right now my friend :)

That would be awesome. I only plan to paint the roof on my mazda 3 in the short term. I have some large rust spots on the roof unsure what caused them. But at some point id like to paint a vehicle. Any thoughts on those inflatable paint booths ?
@LakesideAutobody
2 жыл бұрын
@@Newfoundlander86 To be honest, you really don't need a booth. Here's one thing to always remember.... All of the dust that will be in your paint job is already on the panel before the first coat. Very little dust comes from the surroundings. You might get a few bugs or dust that came out of a gap which was not blown out or other human errors but you really don't even have to wet the floor. Do everything you can to make sure it's dust free before spraying. Jeeze... that's another video! "How to get dust off the panel before painting"

I noticed you recommend sandblasting welds before applying body filler. If your car cannot be moved outside to sandblast, is there any way to keep blasting material from getting all over your garage or places in the car
@LakesideAutobody
4 жыл бұрын
It's not absolutely necessary to sand blast the welds but I do feel that it is the best way to clean and prepare the surface for filler. That being said another good way is to wire brush them and then hit the welds lightly with a die grinder or regular fiber resin disc grinder to prepare them well (clean and roughed up) so filler sticks very well. You can also take a piece of cardboard and block the sand from going every where. That's what I do and then just sweep up good. Every now and then I'll take the leaf blower to the garage a blow everything out the door. After thinking about it for a minute, maybe you could try a large clear glass bowl and just put that over the gun while you blast - that just might do it for you. Jerry

Watching this made me think of a problem ive been facing. The size of the truck.....how do you reach the roof? In my case I have a '64 suburban and the roof is huge! Its even lowered and I can not reach across it with out touching the sides of the vehicle. I use small aluminum platforms and its very difficult to reach. Plan is to paint before next summer. Thanks for the great videos!
@LakesideAutobody
4 жыл бұрын
You just have to stand on something and maybe narrow the fan of the spray gun. Watch the hose and your clothes so you don't drag them across the fresh paint when trying to reach the middle of the roof. Worst case scenario is paint the roof separate from the rest of the truck. Let me know how it goes when you do it - Jerry

Excellent video, i become addicted to your videos. I have one problem, which never resolved for past 5 years. I pained so far 200 cars in past 5 years. as you did in this video, step 1 apply tape, step 2 apply masking paper on top of the tape, ... when i apply clear i get over spray exactly when i remove the masking paper (ie the just after masking paper tape applied on step 2, i dont see overspray on masking paper tape on step 1). dont know the reason, i changed masking paper, i know other painters use same paper. Any idea why it is coming. i use roller from 3m from home depot, will that be the reason..
@LakesideAutobody

I don't understand where your over spray is. Could you explain again? If it's getting under the paper, maybe it's bad quality paper (soaking through) or maybe it's going in between the two layers of tape. Make sure you use 3M auto body refinishing tape and press it down the whole distance that it lays on the other tape. Ask again if I didn't answer correctly. Jerry

@@LakesideAutobody Thank you for you reply. When i remove the masking paper overspray is there just at the end of the second tape, First tape is used for step1, second tape(with masking paper) is used on top of first tape. Overspray start at the edge of second tape(which has masking paper) for an inch... I am thinking it could be that paper and tape is not sealing(may be there is a gap). I used good quality 3m finishing tape and good quality paper. Only thing i am not positive is the masking machine that i am using. I got one from home depot called as 3M M3000 Hand-Masker Paper Tape Dispenser. if you google it you will find it, this is hand masking dispenser. Hope you are getting it.

@@sivucit I'm going to guess that the paper is not aligning well with the tape on your M3000. Make sure that 1/2 of the tape is on the paper and 1/2 is left to stick to your 1 step tape. I use this: www.amazon.com/ALC-Keysco-ALC78001-Portable-Masker/dp/B00JF5GXB6 You can adjust and align the tape to the paper. Let me know how you solve the problem - I'm curious now. Jerry
