Great Instructional Video! This humorous presentation works well with this very serious subject. I hope I don't need to actually use my bear spray but it's good to know how to use it properly. It's also very important to know how to avoid conflict and/or what to do after spraying a bear, which this video covers quite well. Thank you!

Thanks for the informative video. I liked how carry, deployment, and use were broken down and explained. However, I do believe I can pass on some valid criticism on the subject of the "last line of defense" first voiced by The Examiner's Dave Smith, whose articles are unfortunately not available on their webpage anymore. Due to Stephen Herrero's 1999 study, Tim Smith's 2008 study, and their joint study in 2012 bear spray has become known as the ultimate bear defense tool, however the latter two survey only small sample sizes of 66 and 72 respectively, discount incidents when bear spray is not accessed quickly enough, and 30% or more of the cases in Smith's study involved professionals hazing bears. Meanwhile, the 2012 study addressing firearm effectiveness actually did take into account incidents where users failed to fire in time and only examined incidents of aggressive bear behaviour, whereas the earlier bear spray studies only accounted for aggressive behaviour in less than half of each of their sample sizes. These discrepancies notwithstanding, another Alaskan study by Miller & Tutterrow circa 1999 found firearms to be effective, resulting in injuries to users less than 2% of the time in over 2,000 incidents. Instead of addressing these findings, Herrero and Smith conveniently claimed they were the first to approach the topic. Obviously, not everyone has the opportunity or the desire to lug around an 8lb shotgun on their hike, but they should not be entirely dismissed as effective protection.

I heard about a fishing spot up in the mountains. So I get there yesterday and see the bear warning on the beginning of the trail that leads to the pond. On my way I see so much bear shit, probably 15 piles and I see fresh paw prints on the sandy trail. I was by myself and so scared because I have never been hiking in my life and I didn't know much about bears but I just researched and it says black bears rarely attack and there have only been 59 deaths since 1900 in North America. I'm gonna buy some bear spray now but I'm relieved that black bears seem pretty cool about just trying to live their life and not attacking humans.

In general good advice about hiking in bear country and bear spray might work ok with an inquisitive black bear or even a surprise encounter with a black bear. However if you wait until a Grizzly gets within 12 feet you are going to get shredded. This is especially true if it is charging. A grizzly bear was once clocked while running at 41 miles per hour (66 kph) by a ranger in Denali National Park, in Alaska. That thing will be tearing you apart in less than a second or 800 pounds of Grizzly will hit you and run over you at 60kph before it turns around and finished you off. At 4:10 in the video it shows a "depiction" of a grizzly, the size of a dog, walking causally towards our towering hero with his bear spray deployed. Yeah, right, wait for it. I'll put my money on that grizzly being several times as big, lunching into a full sprint at 30-50 feet and turning our hero into little more than a pepper flavored blood stain. When it comes to Grizzly bears, he can keep his bear spray, I'll take a 45-70 any day of the week.

There is new research that shows that the original research was both biased toward bear spray and flawed in it's execution. All of the research done against guns was using incidents where the bears were aggressive whereas less than 1/3rd of the incidents using bear spray were aggressive bears with the majority being passive situations. People have been mauled by enraged bears that simply ran through the spray to attack. I would encourage everyone to do their own research.

has anyone seen the episode of “I Survived” where the two guys in the Canadian wilderness couldn’t get the safety off their can of bear spray? They were stuck out of contact until the helicopter came to pick them up at pre-arranged time/place. Against the odds, they survived. However, they were mauled. I don’t remember the details except one was scalped by the bear. The bear literally took off the top of his head.

This is mostly very good. You have two major inaccuracies that keep me from using this video. 1) Proven is the wrong word. There is ONE peer-reviewed paper by credible biologists indicating that spray could be more effective than firearms. Additional rigorous research is needed before you use the word "proven." 2.) This business of not looking a bear in the eye is a myth. Bear behavior experts don't agree. How would you know when to spray? Otherwise, this is very, very good and fun.

i really really hate to say this but how about a bunch of guys with a bunch of guns holstered and safeties off ready to fire. Because theres just so many variables with spray like you run out and if you miss from wind and you have a safety and it doesnt look like its as fast and easy as a gun. I know bear spray deters bears the best and doent kill them where as a gun will not stop a bear because not powerful enough but personally i would prefer many guys with guns at least 4 guys with me all with guns. i would not go out alone unless was in a wide open land and had a shotgun with buckshots and bear spray also but actually id never go out alone i would prefer 3-4 people preferably 4 people all armed to the teeth with bear spray and guns. Thats just me because a bear can just take one swipe and its over and they are fast and can come up from behind and you could wake them and they run 40 mph so youd better have more guys there better chance. best thing is stay out of bear territory because you are in their home basically.

Here is the SAFEST WAY to use Bear spray, when the 🐻 charges, wait until it's about 7-10 FEET from you, BY this time you will be dropping the spray, then SHOOT YOUR GUN AT SAID BEAR UNTIL DEAD! Actually I love Bears and would only harm one in defense of family and friends or self. Bear spray is a huge risk because some 🐻 act like 🐻 spray is just seasoning. A motivated bear will most likely NOT BE DETERRED. NO REAL GUIDE WOULD BE COMFORTABLE IN THE BUSH WITHOUT A GUN PERIOD.

You need to work on your acting. And directing :) Otherwise, it's a great video. I'm totally surprised no one asked this before me: Have you had the chance to actually use the spray against a bear??? @AndiCBair
6 жыл бұрын
Entertaining, but the video gets an essential emphasis wrong. Says spray is 'most effective' when the bear is '12 feet' away, which some may infer to mean you wait for it. If the bear is charging, that is too close, and could be deadly- for you. The idea is not only to hit the bear on the face with the spray. You are trying to make him go through a cloud of spray to get to you. So, spray when the bear is 30 to 60 feet away- depending on the brand you use, provided he is charging. Do this even if the spray does not reach all the way to the bear. For your safety, watch video and read details on any major national park website.
