This is helpful. I've been wanting to start intermittent fasting but my big barrier is that I take a medication in the morning (exactly 12 hrs from the evening dose) that is fat-soluble, requiring that I take it with fat. I always thought this meant that I can never do I.F., but recently I've been trying MCT oil alone as my morning fat source and I think it's working! I'm getting many of the benefits of I.F. even thought I'm technically breaking my fast. I've also noticed that if I eat any other fat, like 1 tbsp of butter with the AM med, it triggers a hunger drive, which MCT doesn't seem to do. I just wanted to post this in case others are in the same boat.

@@dylanfredrick8393 he never says what you should do, he just points out to studies, like every new study it is still in the peer review phase, so, after a while the data starts to repeat, that is the one that is more likely to be true for everyone, also, there is not good and bad here, is good and better, you can't implement everything at once, that would be nuts, the tldr for what to do for keto and if, do Mediterranean keto and do some 16h fast every once in a while, not too frequently or changing breakfast and dinner as the skipped meal constantly, that is enough, the rest are things that make marginal improvements compared to this, good to know, but not too relevant for most people.

@@susanh6807 I honestly think he puts so little info in every video, I understand why (papers have a lot of testing and not very long conclusions) but it is very basic info, super easy to follow, and I dont have a healthcare professional background, only school biology, one of my teachers explained to us why the keto diet worked for fat loss, that was even before it was called keto at large, she explained how the digestion of fats also take more energy than the digestion of carbs, so, at the same calorie level the body naturally worked more and liberated more heat, and our body takes that and created the carbs it needed, separating the fats, instead of using it directly, like carbs, that was before it was widely known all the other ways it helped (this was like 15 years ago)

Key note - when using MCT oil in hot liquids like coffee ☕ and tea. Make sure that you allow the coffee or tea 🍵 to cool down for a bit so that the MCT oil isn't broken down and you still get maximum benefits while avoiding upsetting your stomach.😊💖💯

Coffee should be below 150 degrees fahrenheit. At 150, the temperature screws with the mct and can also cause stomach upset. If you can't wait for it to cool before adding, I just add a little extra cold water to my black coffee, which drops the temperature down about 10 degrees, to approximately 135-140 Fahrenheit.

I have an electric milk frother so most mornings I froth up heavy cream and MCT oil to add to my coffee. I don't remember having a bad reaction to MCT oil but I was eating keto for a while before I added it. I found that I would have ketones of around 2 later in the day so I think it worked for ketosis as well. I have been adding a 17 to 36 hour fast once a week lately, but with the caveat of having one or two MCT coffees in that time. Not exactly a fat fast as the internet defines but not exactly a true fast.

Some folks claim the amt of MCT's in coco oil is not high enough like we were told. MCT oil is composed of MCTs, the medium chain fats, caprylic and capric acid, about 50% of each, whereas these two MCTs make up only like 10% of the coconut oil. Most of coconut oil is the cholesterol-raising longer-chain saturated fats, lauric and myristic.

I woke up multiple time during the night, felt nervous and anxious, cold and leg muscles had a dull cramping going both in hips and hamstrings. Next day felt horrible. Kept nodding off, went home turned on TV and was in and out of asleep for hours. My blood sugar was lower than normal, but where I strive to be, ketones were high. It was not a good experience. How do you keep MCT from causing stomach upset if you're taking it when fasting?
@littlevoice_11

Powder tends to be better than the oil. Also try a low dose then increase. I have it after I break a fast. As a dessert style drink with collagen

@@littlevoice_11 Thanks much, but I dont like all the "stuff" added to most powders. I've been doing this for about 3 years now. My doc even approves of the MCT oil I use, but it still hurts my tummy on an empty stomach. On my non-fasting days I do a coffee with collagen and MCT (and a creamer that also has MCT) - no issues. Think I'll have to just stick with my 48 hour fasts sans MCT for now. I'm not a youngster anymore so things affect me a little differently! 😊💖

@@marcellecostanza1777 that's ok. just trying to help 😊 The Perfect Keto has some good options without nasty additives. There are pure options or one with raw cacao and stevia. I use pure with 10g of collagen which makes it much easier on the tummy. Collagen is very good for gut health. You could also try some digestive support herbs/herbal teas before and after. I think it also depends on your fasting goals too.

I'm not sure if I get it right, here: If I am to put some MCT oil on my morning coffee, it usually means that it comes after a 16 or 18 hours of fasting (for me), so I am breaking my fast with MCT oil... But, anyway, is it any different if I have my MCT/Coffee drink after only 8 hours of fasting? Isn't it always breaking my fast with MCT oil?

I need at least 48-72h to get my mmol beyond 1.0. And after a meal (under 20g carbs and max 1g/kg prot) i drop to 0.5mmols. To keep a high average of mmols throughout the week, I’d need a 96h fast to reach around 3mmols and then keep it well below the 50g carb mark. Is this normal? I understand that mct can boost ketone levels. But doesn’t it hinder the body’s own production of ketones? Besides health and longevity, I’m keto mainly to get to 8-10% body fat (currently at 15%) and also keeping a good performance at the gym (weight training) and on the bike (2x3h / week at intermediate/advanced level). Any help?
@alexandresilva8233

@@delegate104 that’s great results. I think the issue with my levels were related with the fat-protein ratio. Now that fat is almost double the protein I can maintain higher mmol readings while still eating around 2000-2300 kcal a day, 6 days a week (1day I’m fasting). And since I burn around 3000 kcal a week exercising, I’m still at a good deficit

It's almost impossible without expensive lab testing to know if any particular oil is what it's claimed to be. Ordinary canned coconut milk is about 1/3 mct. Goat cheese has mcts too.

@migueljordan100

I would say that doing so would negate many of the benefits that you would otherwise have received by waiting until after your workout. But as Thomas says at times you can break this rule jus know that you normally want to wait until after you break your fast to intake the MCT or coconut oil.

Although the first several months into Keto/Carneto I would add French Vanilla flavoured MCT Oil powder to my Keto friendly pre workout drink to enhance the flavour, and I still lost a lot of weight, and never had any digestive issues. @@migueljordan100 Makes sense. I think he could have broken it down a little more depending on what a person's main reason(s) is/are for Fasting. Like if your main (or only) goal is Body composition then YES/NO to MCT Oil pre-workout in a fasted state; If autophagy is your primary reason, then YES/NO; If Body Composition AND Autophagy are, then YES/NO; etc. That way things would have been more clear.

@@jasonhurst8599 yeah I understand brother, but he's always explaining this point almost In every other video. So I feel that he is coming from a perspective that his viewers are familiar with the base knowledge that he's been putting out over the past few years and doesn't want to take too much time away from the key points as to not sound redundant. Which is why I take the Liberty to help with fielding some inhouse questions to show love to both Thomas and my fellow viewers.
