Eye Health QOTD: What's your favorite way to protect the eyes from blue light?
@starkravingmad51
5 жыл бұрын
Being an Optician, my favorite way to protect eyes from blue light is getting a good pair of prescription glasses from your eye doctor. But of course I'm partial lol. More specifically, Techshield Blue anti-reflective coating made by VSP is my favorite coating. While not protecting at 100% (closer to 70% I think) still blocks out a significant amount of blue light while cosmetically looking the best, In my opinion. Prevencia by Crizal is too purple and I've had patients return those lenses because of how they look. Claris Blue by DEL is ok. But of course, if the patient is ok with having yellow lenses, BluTech lenses do block 100%.

I am not totally sold on blue light causing issues, it is a higher energy photon for sure, but the white point (D65/6500K) of natural daylight contains tons of blue light, though the sun definitely contains much more lower frequency light. Hello Doctor Eye Health! I wanted to add a few things from a computer stand point. Windows 10 computer come built in with a "night light" setting that takes the blue out. Beyond that I was wondering if you would be able to elaborate more on ergonomics of the eye for computers (I manage an IT department in Minneapolis MN). A few things i have heard was the position of the screen makes a difference. If you have the monitor's top in line with your eyes (so you are always looking slightly down). I have also heard that if you get an eye strain headache you can look at something 25 feet or more and that will "rest" your eyes. Lastly having the light in the room you are using a device be at the same level will lessen the strain as well. Thank you for the videos! Sorry for the long post.
@DoctorEyeHealth

I am not an ergonomics expert, but I should really look into this because it is a good topic. Overall, yes to all those things mentioned. Your eyes naturally converge and find it easier to look slightly down at near objects (like a book). So positioning the screen where you gaze slightly downward is the best in my opinion. Less stress on the eye muscles and then you to crank your neck back. There is something called the 20-20-20 rule. where you take a 20 second break looking 20 feet away after staring at the screen for 20 minutes. Helps relax the eye muscle tension. I will have to try out the light source trick, I dont know much about that. I also had no idea windows 10 had a night light. I am so going to try that tonight. Thanks for the great comment! Minnesota is awesome!

I mean, oh wow. I have been practicing anti-bluelight, for almost 50 years. Starting with the most pale yellow UV filter for my 35mm film camera. Back in 1971. When I was only 15 years old. And then shopping, hunting,, for a pair of glasses just like that. And at different shades of yellow to Amber. Whether you are indoors at a dark bar. Or outdoors at the beach on a sunny day. It's hard to deny that blue filtering. As it also really alters my state of mind, being, comfort zone. It's incredibly psychologically fulfilling with light yellow lenses. It changes your entire outlook. As, you no longer see a Silverlining. You see a, Gold one. As a major TV network broadcast engineer. One can, generally, today. Set up there LCD displays. Setting up my own, dimmer, warmer, higher contrast, lower gamma. Or is that lower contrast, higher gamma? You'll just have to find out for yourselves. And skew the base picture for warmer. Put on your favorite boring rerun. And you don't need any drugs to get to sleep. I should know. I worked for a major television network for 20 years. And so we kept our screens very blue. Since we could also dial up HBO on the satellite and watch dirty movies, on the overnight shift. But that was just me. And a dozen other people. And it was easy to watch that while doing the news. You generally wouldn't miss any of the action or a pop fly. If I was wearing my light yellow radar lenses. So I always made a point to. So I could point to. Why I could still wear yellow lenses and not go to sleep. As it makes blue colored TVs look even better. My mother used to scream at me as a kid that, I watched too much television. Always screaming at me. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO DO FOR A LIVING WHEN YOU GROW UP??!! WATCH TELEVISION!!?? I don't know what she was screaming about? Sounded like a great idea to me. Thanks mom! She ate those words every day for over 20 years. As, that was not the only television network I had worked for. I worked for a couple of others, also. Though for a shorter period of time. Before I decided to retire. So I could wear darker amber glasses. Outdoors. Under the sun. Instead of dark bluish dimly lit, control rooms. When I decided to retire. To watching my computer monitor all day. When I'm, 64. Losing my head. But not my eyesight. When I'm, 64. Do! Dumb! And because I wasn't.

@DoctorEyeHealth

Staring directly into lights can cause physical damage to the eye depending on the power of the light and how long someone stares. Blue light from LED lights may cause a change to someone's sleep cycle but right now there is limited evidence to suggest it would cause "damage" to the eye.

Question: What about the light coming from those new & more powerful lights when driving at night? Will those glasses help for that as well?

Anything that filters out the shorter wavelengths (like blue, indigo, violet) will work. Though the short exposure, through your windshield at night from HID and LED headlights is likely to not cause any problems, other than being really annoying

Being outside is worse for your eyes than looking at a screen unless you have stupidly high brightness

Hello. I have to reduce the blue light to avoid the growth of the eye disease (pinguecula). What glasses should I wear? Any brand in special?
