I’m still waiting for fruit production. I bought a farm and in the third year I started planting tiny apple trees. The following year, I really got after it and found close out apple trees late in the fall (deer hunt season) and I planted them. The following spring I order trees from Stark and planted 28 trees. That fall I got more end of season and planted 16 more. The following spring I ordered 32 trees and planted them. A month later (May) I bought 3 dozen fruit trees left over from last year and they didn’t even know what they were. I don’t care. I bought them and planted them. That fall I bought 42 fruit trees and planted them too. I had lost track of how many I planted but I bought top soil and fertilizer and plastic trunk guards and 11 feet of 2”X4” X 4 feet tall fence with 2 posts for every tree to protect from deer and rabbits. I’ve been planting trees every year for 5 years! I lost lots of them (about 20%)to heat, drought, deer, rabbits, mice and voles and freaks of nature! I even accidentally ran over a few with the tractor and bush hog when I had a mechanical event.☹️ Anyway, I was out today weedeating around the fruit trees because it was sunny and 52° ! I’m praying for fruit this year! I have about 125 trees still alive. Most are apple, some are peach and pear, some are prunes and apricot and some are persimmons! I’ve got trail cam pictures of at least 6 big nice bucks on my property since January first of this year! While cutting firewood every day! Oh yea, I just ordered 65 red osier dogwood plants to plant too. This is the first time that I’ve owned a farm to hunt on my own property. The first two years I was busy building a house and moving in.

How big (diameter) are your trees about a foot from the ground? Have you seen any blossoms in the spring? No fruit at all, yet? Most apples will produce in 3 years.

Most of them, I still can touch my index finger to my thumb around the trunk. There is about 2 dozen that is larger and got a few blossoms last spring but no fruit.

Thank you so much for taking time to talk to me, I appreciate it! I also wanted to say that I value your information and love your channel! I especially enjoyed your videos about buck beds in swamps and on points in public land. I didn’t get any deer this year but I’ve learned a lot from you and you’ve made me more determined to go find a big one. i have almost 4,000 acres of really great public hunting land across the road from me. Thank you for putting this information on KZitem.

Absolutely! Thanks for the kind words. Do as much scouring as you can and when you see a big boy on trail camera, crossing the road or in person, ask yourself 'why was he there?' Stuff starts to make sense after awhile!

I bought 60 acres of land 40 is ag the other 20 is all wild apple trees. Yes 20 acres of wild apple tree that are over grown, choked out with vines and brush. Well its 4 years later and i have pruned about 30 trees and every year the trees are producing bigger and better fruit. I havent touched a 1/3 of all the trees yet. Its a work in progress.

My best advice is to cut out all competing vegetation, especially any vines or bushes, very near and in the apple trees. You can cut them anytime of the year without harming the apple trees. Just let them hang until after hunting season and pull them out in winter when you get cabin fever. Then I would focus on getting all the dead wood out to keep disease at bay which will open the healthy branches to more air circulation and sunlight. In my experience, the first year after opening up the trees they mostly put on growth. The second year you get a decent crop of apples. The third year you are humming with full production...so taking a few years to get things 'under control' isn't bad...you'll always have fruit as you make the transition. The best to you as you work on your deer property!

@@SeedstoDreamsDeer Thanks i have been doing that and the trees that are 2 years pruned back and opened up from vines are producing more and bigger apples.. Its a huge job taking on average 3 days per tree in february / march to do. I have about 30 trees done . I have to many too even count left. The results are worth it and the deer, rabbits etc are on it.

I often find deer have preferred apple trees that are extra attractive to them. Do you see this on your property?
