Thank you immensely for your pruning tip! I purchased a hardy Pink Velour and planted it last May. In June I had gorgeous flowers! I live in Zone 6a and followed planting instructions to the letter. Did a scratch test in February as advised by nursery. My tree is only 4 feet tall but I did a very small amount of pruning according to your instruction and now just waiting for the magic to happen. Thanks again!

Would you recommend also pruning at the bottom near the base? We have some shoots or branches coming up right next to the trunks.

Yes I would remove those as well. They are called " suckers." I get them as well.

Fizzah Raza Use a plopper and go beneath the dirt for about an inch and clip the base of the new sucker. If the sucker is coming directly from the tree itself just clip off as close as possible to the branch itself. Hope that helps! Happy pruning!!

Why would the limbs grow inward if they aren't supposed to? The inward branches probably support the others and allow bird nests.

So I was reading its best to prune in spring...early spring? I want to encourage blooming. I didnt even know what they were, these are trees planted already when we bought our new house (budders always add these to the fronts of each new house they build.) so for nearly 7 years i didnt know what they were and I just pruned.

Rick, my crepes have bloomed beautifully this summer. However, I want them to have fresh blooms for when my family comes into town in next few weeks. So I cut the current blooms off as my neighbors passed looking at me as if I’m crazy. When I watch videos about cutting current blooms off it looks like they leave semi hardwood behind. Mine however look like I left hardwood behind after clipping. Will these still bloom from the tip as intended or are they going to start from the last leaves that I didn’t cut back? So hard to explain and I’m so sad. Please help.

What is the purpose of the pom-pom shape? It looks like you recommend 4 feet of bare trunk. What is the rationale for that? I ask because I have 2 Crepe Myrtles that I planted last summer, so they've been in the ground for 9 months. It's towards the end of March and they've both started to grow leaves. I've trimmed away damaged and dead wood, and suckers and cut out inside growing branches. I put a spreader on two main trunks that occasionally rubbed.

I moved into a home with really tall, four to five trunked crepes. They had blooms but were legging. Lots of limbs and too much gray showing. So we cut them back about two months ago. The new growth came quickly and greener than they were before. Here in Florida I think you can cut back with no worries. With any plant, you just prune when it looks dreary/leggy. That’s gives it so much more energy to use elsewhere. My thoughts. 😊

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and just bought two crape myrtle trees - average size 15-20' H x 10-15' W - when should I prune as seen in your video?
@lou-nc4rc

In GA. plants already here when I bought the house. Get way too tall. Cut them back one year, zoomed up again, tangled in branches of big tree overhead. Just the wrong plant in the wrong place I think.

I had one at my home in Gilbert, AZ. The leaf margins (edges) tended to get a little brown in the summer, so deep water. They like a lot of sun to bloom, but if you can find a spot where it is a little protected from the late afternoon sun - that would be a good idea.
@brokenbutterfly3178

@@michaelbialowitz5301 I don't get it. It's listed as drought and heat tolerant with most websites claiming that the hotter the sun, the more flowers it produces so it should be perfect for the Arizona climate..

Many people didn't buy the tree. It came with the house and they have to make it fit. Crape Myrtle virtue signaling has gotten really stale
