My mother used to grow award winning roses (I loved her Eiffel Towers!) and taught me to cut the bud facing the direction you want the new branch to go, not just any bud that could grow in the wrong direction. She always cut her branches back to 3 main branches or 4 if the branches are equally spaced out.

How do you cut something in the direction you want it to grow though?
@wesredding8453

to the commenters here. sometimes explaining garden stuff to people who don’t garden is kinda tricky. i have not a clue about to Eiffel towers, but cutting in the desired direction meaning once its cut the new spout or branch will push out through the opening thats been cut. so cutting it the way you want it to come out. opening going which ever direction you want.

Can you do some overwintering vids? Like how to keep certain plants safe from the cold, different methods, tools to help, when should I stop watering things that need to be wrapped up/buried (like raspberries), and whatever else there is on that subject that you feel you can provide! All the best

One important thing missing in this video is, it should be an OUTSIDE bud, so that the new growth goes out and allows for good air flow and more open in the center of the plant. Happy gardening and have a great day!!
@SnailHatan

That depends entirely on how you want it to look. It’s not like the plant will stop growing with inside growth

@@fateemajohnson825 Hello! Yes, every spring you need to prune your roses, harder the first time of the year and then lightly as you are deadheading through the season.

Cut above the bud site that you want to keep. You want to find a bud that is facing outward, that is the direction the stem will grow. You want your rose plant to have a vase like shape, open in the middle so there is sufficient airflow.

I would love to see videos on getting seeds from flowering plants! That way you don’t have to rely on people that sell seeds and can be a little more self sufficient.

When you say "cut it" do you mean cut it AT the bud site? Or just cut near it? Or above it? Below it?

Cut at 45 degree angle away from the bud so water doesn't sit on the cut or lead too the bud. you obviously don't want to cut the bud it's self if you leave it; it will go black and you can cut it then (if unsure, but it may die back a little beyond the extra growth if left too long so be attentive as it can be unsightly ) also cut too a bud which is facing the direction you want the shoot too grow. roses are typically really vigorous growers so don't be concerned about pruning too hard(cutting off die back etc) eventually you will have to give the plant a structural prune as multiple stems thicken and lignify and the plant becomes crowded

I’ve read that when you cut at the 45 degree angle, you should make the longer side of the cut toward the outer side of the cane to encourage new growth to go outwards rather than inwards.

PSA - Rose thorns can cause infections if the prick you. I got pricked by one of the thornes last year while pruning one of these (through my gardening gloves even). It must have had some bacteria on it because it seemed to have caused some infection. Even though I just got pricked on a finger (no blood or thorn reminent in skin), my whole arm began to get sore after a week and stayed sore for over a week after that. Once I realized there was an issue I hot serious about cleaning out the infection site with alcohol and applying ointment, etc., while it helped it was a little bit to late. The next time it happened I did that immediately and didn't have an issue. Bottom line is that roses can be dangerous - don't ignore a minor prick just because it didn't bleed or there was no part of the thorn in your skin!
