I love indeterminate tomato plants! Last year, I bought a six pack from my local nursery, pruned just like you said, and those babies got over 7 ft tall! I had so many stakes and yarn holding them up lol it was crazy! This is my fourth year gardening and I just love it ❤ I'm learning so much every year especially from your channel! Thank you so so much for sharing great gardening tips!

The first times I pruned suckers, then the bottom branches, wow was I nervous! But I think it helped the plants a lot, and kept that airflow through the bottom. Just when you think you've got all the info, you learn something new!

I am so glad to hear I can choose not to prune this year. The last two years I have accidentally pruned the main stem! I am going to let them grow this year and only take out the bottom foot of leaves, at least for now.

I have done that too. A good rule of thumb I have learned over the years is, don’t pull the suckers immediately. Wait & see which stem the flowers are growing off of above the sucker. THAT’S the main stem. The flowers (and eventually fruits) always grow off the main stem.

Those rascally suckers! I try to prune as many as I can, but a few always get away from me! However, If the sucker is a few inches long, I sometimes cut it & root it water or soil. Since I have a long growing season, I end up having another "seedling" that I can plant a little later in the season that will give me tomatoes through the fall when the first tomato planting is beginning to tire out. With a little luck, I can sometimes get tomatoes into December.

Great tutorial on tomato pruning. My question is a bit off topic but I'm hoping to get your feedback. I've built new raised beds and my seedlings are not growing as they should. I believe I added too much manure (composted for several years) to mix soil mix and not enough peat. It feels like they are not getting any nutrients and the soil is not holding moisture. Can I amend from the top down or do I need to pull the plants and amend the soil in its entirety? I have no resources for soil testing where I am. HELP!! Thank you!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
2 жыл бұрын
So I would up water soluble nitrogen waterings. See if that helps get them more growth. That will balance issues with manures using up nitrogen. Adding more amendments for moisture is tough without disturbing your plants. I would just mulch with grass clippings or straw or something that holds moisture itself and will help keep moister in the soil.. Good luck. Hello Gary. Appreciate your videos! I had a quick question - can cooler weather especially after a heavy rain cause damage to younger tomato and pepper plants? By cooler I mean high in the 60's and low in the 40's for a couple days/nights as well as overcast. I planted my hot peppers and tomatoes out 2 1/2 weeks ago with temps in the 80's and 60's and we just had a drastic change in temperature yesterday.

Its same production. Each stem does what it does. that main stem will keep growing taller too and adding tomatoes. But often the tomatoes on they stems you keep are larger when not competing with a dozen other stems you pruned off. More stems more tomatoes. Less stem less tomatoes but larger. Does this apply to indeterminate cherry tomatoes? Recently I heard to not prune those.

Interested in this answer as well, I pruned down to one stem last year which produced decent but I wasn't impressed. I want more cherries this year, going to let the plants have more suckers & grow more wild....hopefully I don't regret it 😅

You can prune them for sure. However, I wouldnt do single or double stem for them. They just get massive so you prune to manage the size. I've lost control of all my cherry tomatoes! The canopy is so dense it looks to be more than 2 stems at this point and it's getting difficult to tell what is the main stem. They're probably about 3.5 - 4 feet tall and so more growing still to do.

I wouldnt do singe or double stem pruning for cherries. But I do prune for size. I take of the Botton as I spoke and I do remove sucker from up top and cut leaves to keep them in their space. Single stemming tomatoes is so stupid. They want to grow like a bush, let them. You get so many tomatoes. Do you realize how many suckers you’d have to pull off all season? How is that worth it. It’s for people that don’t want to leave their plants alone
