I wasn't able to do even a single close grip pull up at all. I tried the bungee and the assisted pull up machine and both felt unnatural. Instead I started doing only negatives for about 6 weeks. I took 5 seconds to lower my body every time. Then one day I decided to try a pull up and to my delight, I was able to do 1. Now I can do 5 legit pull ups. Negatives are great! !

Nice video Scott! Those were good tips with those bungee bands and slow negatives too. A lot of people have great difficulty going the full distance with pull-ups because they have weak Lower Traps. As your chin goes over that bar, you need Scapular Depression to occur (which the Lower Traps do), so those slow negatives will target those Lower Traps more and make it easier to do that movement. You make those Pull-Ups look easy though, I bet you could even beat Mike Chang's Pull-Up Guinness World Record!

Thanks for the great tips. I lost a lot of weight. Used to weigh 324 at 6'2". Now weigh 215. Only 20-25 more to go. I started pushups 6 months ago and could only do 6. Now I'm doing over 50 and still increasing. I bought a pull-up bar yesterday. I can only do 2 pull-ups now, but I know that I'll improve over the next several months. Your tips are going to be a big help, so thank you!

Pyramids with the 15-30 second rest periods are also excellent ways to get your max up. Adding the negatives to finish your workout when you cannot perform anymore pull ups is GOLDEN in driving that max up. The chest high barbell pull ups are genius for building needed strength to perform the move properly. That’s excellent as long alas the discipline is there to only add what you need and no more from the legs.

Good stuff as usual dude! I needed a lot of help to do my first pull-up a few years ago, and the inverted rows I think were key in helping. Currently weigh 213. Here's my most recent pullup day: 5+2neg(20lbvest), 9, 6.7, 5.5+3neg, 6.5+1neg, 5.5+2neg, 4.5+3neg - I superset all the pullup sets with pushups, and after the first 4 sets, I switch to lawnmower/pushup supersets. Lawnmowers currently at 80lbs: 6/6, 6/6, 6/6. It's a killer workout! - p.s., you'll notice I track any partial reps - i.e. "6.7". That's because I like to be able to recall every ounce of effort I put into a set. If I got 6.7, last week, I'd better be able to do at least 7 full reps, this week.

The key to increase you max reps is do pull ups more often, I was stuck on 7 for a long time. if you want to get better at something practice it everyday. I started doing 5 sets of 3 CLEAN POWERFUL reps every day and within 3 weeks I could do ten consecutive. Obviously you want to stay well away from failure if you're performing a lift everyday or most days.The point of this is to teach your body to become more efficient at performing the movement but I'm sure the extra volume helps as well. IMO this is a great way to break through plateaus, Im trying it out on the bench press atm and it's seems to be working.

Hi, Scott, Here is an exercise i've tried: 10 seconds isometric hold + negatives + plus paused. - first, I did 10 seconds isometric hold up in the bar. As many as I can until I cannot hold the entire 10 seconds, - after that, without rest, 10 secs negatives. I got up to the bar and did the negatives each one for 10 secs. As many until the negative takes less than 10 secs. - after that, without rest, I went for paused pullups. One rep, pause, another rep, pause, rep... until failure. The pause is brief, just the time to get to the floor, let the bar goes, get hands down and reengage. I've done that thinking about increasing strenght and reps. But the isometric hold helps lats activation. And there were some interesting size gains. What do you think about that?

I've been having some left shoulder pain while doing pull-ups. It's a sharp pain, outer/back shoulder. Feels deep/non-muscular. Only occurs during pull-ups during the lower phase, and only during the first set. When I feel it coming on, I stop or else it'll keep getting worse until I have to drop from the bar. Once I stop and rest for a bit, I can do more sets and the pain doesn't come back. I had concern that it might be a rotator cuff issue, but I have only experienced this during pull-ups and lat pulldowns... no other exercises cause this. I've been avoiding pull-ups for a few weeks in case I was making it worse. Any input or suggestions?

Yo I have a question regarding this subject. I try to follow the rule you described: always go back to a dead hang. The problem with me though is that my shoulders are extremely flexible (I am a high level swimmer) and therefore when I fully extend my shoulders dislocate. Now I can easily pull them back in the joint, this dislocation is not special at all (it happens all the time in swimming), but it makes my reps soo much harder. I always have to engage my back scapula muscles alot more to do pull ups and I end up doing half the reps I otherwhise do. Now it's not like I can extend my arms fully without doing that, it's either doing kind of half reps or doing this. Which one would you recommend?

@ScottHermanFitness
9 жыл бұрын
well, I think that is some good bro science. I dont understand why scooby would tell people to reduce the range of motion. that will leave weakness at the top and bott9m of the movement and the negative is where you break down the most muscle tissue a9 reducing the negative by not fully extending is leaving out gains you could be making

Hey Scott! So if I wanted to increase my pull--ups, would it work if I went to failure doing normal pull-ups and then jumping up to the bar and doing as many negatives as possible and that consists of one set or would that be too much fatigue/detrimental?

I have to build up to some sort of side to side pull up, is better to master a basic pull up before hand or just learn with my current exercise?

Maximus well, if you watch my video on the push-ups I explain both sides of when it is ok to do push-ups everyday and when it isnt. Apply the same concept to pull-ups and any other exercise. :) I hope you join our community on www.MuscularStrength.com! Lots of great articles, recipes, workouts and you will love hangin' with the community in our forums!

Is it necessary to actually have your chin over the bar? I usually just stop when the bar hits my eye level.
@MrAYEJAYLOCO

That's perfect for pullups. Eye level is plenty range of motion for the lat muscle, when doing pull ups. When doing chin ups, is when you bring your chin over the bar, because that works more biceps.
