Thank you so much for your demonstration and explanation on the side border feathers. I have struggled with this for a while and this video was perfect for me.

I inherited my sister's long arm, (actually bought it from my nephew). I'm not very good at it, I quilted 3 or 4 at her house before she passed away but they weren't very good. I've done 3 in the last 3 months for family but..... I need some of the tools you are using. I received the blue 1 1/2" clips today and I'm excited to use them, I always make mine too tight. The last one didn't turn out very well but the friend didn't put it together very well either. I have 8 quilts to do, I just need the proper rulers.

I had trouble too with borders. I figured out that I could stitch some pebbles to cross over the stem to the other side then I filled the stem with pebbles when feather was done. I also split up the feather design with a small motif in the center. It helped me alot. Love watching your Long Arm videos. I have been at it my self on a borrowed machine for about six months. I am looking to getting my own very soon. Sent you and email about it today!

That's great Denise! Yep, those vertical borders are always going to come out different unless you unpin the quilt and reload it going in the other direction. I can't wait to help you find the perfect machine for you!

I am so glad you covered this Leah. I also wonder about how you would tackle ruler work in the borders, where you want to come out with your quilt design evenly spaced from corner to corner.

That's a great question Marnie! It will depend a lot on the design, but I would start like I did in this video and mark at least one guideline using the rulers down the middle of each border. Then work off of that, full length on the horizontal borders, and in pieces like I did in this video for the side borders. I'll definitely think about this for a future tutorial with the rulers!

I have used a strip of paper the length of the border or sashing, folded into equal segments and worked a motif into each segment to get the design to come out evenly. Like you pointed out, some ruler motifs might lend themselves to that technique better than others. Sometimes all of that figuring and fiddling hurts my head. So I thank you for taking the time to produce your video tutorials. I have learned so much from you.

If you put a cloth under the roller on each end it should lift so you have more forward room.

Hi Leah, I look forward to these Friday videos. I see some stitch lines going across your quilt, are those basting stitches? Do you baste across your quilts like that when using the frame? Also I am wondering if the rails on your frame that the machine rolls across are the metal? The reason I'm asking is I bought a Grace SR2 frame a year ago & the rails on that are plastic & they have cracked on me. Grace has replaced them for me, but I am concern that this might be a continuing problem. I am hoping to find some one that could fabricate something to fit on my rails that are not plastic. I have looked at the frame you have, but it is hard to see what the rails are like. Thanks for any info you could give me.

Hi Pat - Only for this quilt did I baste on the longarm because it went on really wonky. Make sure to watch the video here: leahday.com/blogs/machinequilting/switching-between-a-home-machine-and-longarm The Continuum Frame is all metal rails that are painted white. I don't think the rails are cross compatible between these two frames. I would keep using your SR2 and enjoy it, but if it cracks again and you want to go with a bigger frame, then consider the Continuum. I wouldn't stop using it just for fear of breaking it. Instead aim to use it so much you break it, and then you can use that as an excuse to get the metal frame! LOL!

Leah, I’ve recently purchased a long arm quilting machine. I started out free motion quilting on a domestic machine, then, a sit down long arm. My problem is that my quilting on the long arm doesn’t look as good. I’m struggling with curves, circles, etc. I’ve tried the regulated stitch and the manual mode. Neither one looks great. Do you have a preference as to the mode? By the way, you’re a great teacher. You don’t rush, which is great.

Hi Joann - This is a normal issue as you're getting used to the speed of a longarm. You have a lot more power on this machine than a home machine. Is your longarm still set up as a sit down? If so, try lowering the speed down to 30%. Do you have a foot pedal to control the machine? If so, I would use that and the manual mode. The biggest key is balancing your hand speed and the machine speed. If you already did this well on your home machine, then that sync is already in your body, you just need to slow down the machine to stop it from running away with you. Most likely the tension issues you're seeing are NOT tension, but speed / movement issues. Slow down the machine, speed up your hands a bit and see what happens!
