I have a 20 gallon aquarium with Corey catfish, African dwarf frogs, guppies, Danios, mollies and tetras. After a water change my pH is 6.4 or maybe even lower. It's not really matching anything on the strip bottle. I don't have live plants and there is no ammonia , nitrates or nitrites present. I bought tetras correct pH tablets and was wondering if that would be safe to use. It says to use one tablet for every 10 gallons .
@cheddarsock

The strips are a more economical way to get readings for kh, which you're assuming is the direct reason for the low ph. It's cheaper to buy 100 strips to dial in carbonates than to buy the liquid test kit, and they're going to be reasonably accurate to indicate where things are.

I need hellllllp... I'm losing my mind with my aquarium lol! I'm fairly new to the aquarium world; I've had my tank for a few months now. I set everything up about a week before I added my fish and all of my levels were perfect. I have a 36 gallon tank with a Silenstream 40 Power Filter, a thermometer, artificial plants, gravel, 3 Tiger Barbs (2 of them died a couple weeks ago) and 2 Koi Angels. I check the pH daily and it was on the high side, so I added one dose of pH down - that was probably 6 weeks ago now; the pH went down to around 6.8. Around that time I also noticed my ammonia starting to rise (this is also when I lost 2 of my barbs). I vacuumed the gravel, changed the filter and did a 25% water change - my pH now dropped all the way to 6.0. Since then I've been struggling with the ammonia and pH. I use pH up and the recommended dosage literally has zero effect. I add a dose, wait 12-24 hours and add another dose (because I know pH change needs to be slow) and it doesn't budge. I got frustrated and added double the amount and finally the pH went up slightly to 6.4, but then by the next day it's right back down. For the ammonia, I treated the tank with Ammo Lock and followed the instructions. After the 7 days of treating with Ammo Lock, yesterday I vacuumed the gravel, changed the filter and did a 50% water change. I treated the tap water with the water conditioner, waited 20 minutes, then added the bacteria started. The pH of my tap water is 7.4, so I didn't adjust it. When I was done, I checked the pH and ammonia - the pH was at 6.4 and the ammonia barely changed. I left my tank overnight and checked my levels again this morning. My pH is back to 6.0 and the ammonia is still at about 1.5 PPM. I'm at a total loss and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong?! I thought a 50% water change would have a much greater effect. My fish don't seem to be stressed and are actually thriving, but I want to complete my tank and finish adding my last fish. I'm ordering some crushed coral, but I don't know what else I should be doing. ANY advise would be amazing - thank you for reading my novel lol! :)

I used Aquatop Ultraviolet light prior to making the water crystal clear but what I have noticed is that some fish dies so I stop using it. Oh yeah, finally when doing a water change I turned off everything (pump, heater, air bubble) but noticed a significant temp. drop and it took almost 8 hours for the temp to go to its regular around 78 degrees. Can I leave the thermometer on because the tap water is really cold? I know it's a lot but I would appreciate it if you read and respond. Thank you!

Using the method in this video will help make the water more neutral. I also highly doubt an ultraviolet light is killing fish. It’s probably something else. Regarding the water change, do you have hot water? Temperature wings are extremely stressful on fish. That could be the root of the problem as to why you have fish getting sick and dying.

Dominic V Hey man! It can be a variety of different things! How often do you feed? How much do you feed? What type of filtration do you use? What type of media is inside of the filter? How often do you do what changes? How big is that piece of driftwood? Did you do anything to prepare the driftwood prior to adding it to the tank?
@dominicv3378
4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the quick reply, I feed maybe every other day or every 2 days, a mixture of earthworms and raw shrimp, but I only feed what can be eaten as I hand feed most occupants in my tank.. only food that doesn’t get fully eaten sometimes is an algae wafer or two for the plecos. The tank has 2 penguin 350 bio wheels and a fluval fx4 max turnover. Pretty standard media in them, (what they normally use.. water changes are 25-50-% every 2 weeks (depends on what parameters) the driftwood was properly prepared to ensure most of the tannins has leached out, it’s about 12” long x 5-6” wide at its widest spot.. tank water is always pretty clear so I haven’t suspected as much it’s tannins.. I think my KH may not be stable, and no where around me sells tests for it outside of inaccurate strips.. I was contemplating sticking some crushed coral in the HOBs just not sure how much to use to ensure I don’t shock my tank..
@LongIslandFishGuy

Dominic V It’s probably the driftwood. Do you test your tap water right away or do you wait? To get an accurate read on tap pH it should be sitting out in a cup or a bowl or the test tube for 24 hours prior to testing. Test the tap water again if you don’t do this method. If you have already, add the crushed coral. It can also be a mixture of many things!
@dominicv3378

Long Island Fish Guy yea I hadn’t ever done the sit out method until the other day, ph out the tap is around 7.. truly think I just don’t have the buffering to keep it up, going to try crushed coral in the filter tonight and see how it goes.. any recommendations on how much to use?

20 gallon tall hexagon, substrate, 2 small pieces of drift wood, wonder shell, 2 plants, 6 guppies that keep having fry. Ammonia is high, pH super low like 6.0, kH as low as it can be. gH test kit on the way. It has been restarted so many times. I have tried to cycle it completely but it never does. I was just wondering in it is bc I can’t keep pH up.

pH can be part of the problem. Do you have enough biological filtration on the aquarium? What type of filter are you using? What are the ammonia reads? There’s definitely a lot going on in the tank, just need to take it one step at a time to improve the environment.

So Yesterday I was doing a 25% water change for my tank, so I took some water out and then I went to a Watermill Express place to bring my water (I brought 14 gallons, I only need like 10) and I tested the new water and it says its at 6.0 for PH I haven't added it to my fish tank yet, Ive seen some bottles at the pet store that says it helps Raise the PH and im not sure if those are safe for my betta, I looked for crushed coral and I cant find any at the stores. I have a few questions to help you out! How big is the tank? What was your pH prior to the cuddlebone? How small are the pieces? I wouldn’t worry about the fish eating the cuddlebone. It’s no different than gravel, sand, or crushed coral as substrate in the aquarium.

Cuddlebone does not affect nitrate. Nitrate in your aquarium is a biproduct of many things in the aquarium like food, waste, and fish excretion. I would also not worry about the cuddlebone “grains” in the aquarium. No different than sand in the water. The natural habitat for fish have plenty of floating debris and has no affect on the fish. I’m not even sure why you have pieces of cuddlebone in the aquarium because it should dissolve, not break.

Siddharth Jethe I’ve never owned African cichlids, but I do know that they need to be in a tank with a pH of anywhere from 7.8 to 8.5. The best way to maintain that is to use the gravel that I put in my filter as your actual gravel. You need a crushed coral gravel for African cichlids. Hope this helps!

What are some of the other types of fish that you have tried adding? Assuming most of the new fish you get are living in water between 6.0 and 8.0, 4.0 would be a big shock and transition. Only a few species could take that. Do you have plants? CO2? Clean the filters regularly? Organic matter can really bring down that pH naturally too.
