I really liked the perspective you offered about not being afraid to give movies fives. A lot of the time I end up dismissing movies as bad if they're not great and you make really good points about it being a gradient and it not being great but a 4-6 rating is a really natural place for a lot of movies to end up at.

I recently started rating movies and I realized my ratings are flawed as I easily gets influenced from imdb ratings and other online reviewers. I was searching for a video on how to rate a movie efficiently and I think this video is the best. I appreciate it so much. I would love if you can make a video on giving examples on movies that are flawed in some ways and explanation on how to find flaws. Like what is missing in Die Hard 2 that you think it's not 10, but 8/9.

This is a fantastic video, I have personally come to a very similar view of things. I started out rating things on a bell curve, because as a more stem minded person it just seemed like the appropriate thing to do. But my thoughts shifted over time for the same reason as yours, most people are going to naturally want to watch movies that are good. People know their own taste, generally, and are going to seek out things they think they will like while ignoring film that looks bad. If you were to watch every move that was ever made, the bell curve distribution would probably be moved to the left of center, partially because most of what people recommend and talk about is good stuff in the same way most people only listen to the top couple percentage of artists. But this would also be because you're watching a lot of content that doesn't interest you. I believe this is why when we rate things individually, a 3.5 or 7 should be a pretty good/average movie. 3 or 6 you still enjoy but maybe there's some flaws. 2.5 or 5, I personally use for content I'm apathetic to, and then below that is anything I didn't like or find to be good. I have 2's or 4's that I still found somewhat fun at moments, just didn't think were good. That's why my curve is similarly shifted to the right, where the largest category of ratings I give is a 3.5 or 7 and then less and less down to 5's or 10's. For me this feels like it gives a very natural way to approach the ratings for what I watch, and my ratings curve has remained fairly consistent overall. edit: Wanted to add that I think it's also a good idea overall to look at these ratings relative to other films in their categories, like a tier list, where it becomes easier to get a perspective on what makes that film the rating you gave it. That can often help you to see "oh, these all belong together because they're similar quality". For this reason my own curve isn't super tall, it's a bit shorter and spread out, because there's so much nuance and I'm always trying to find another 5 or 10.

Thanks for the compliment and thoughtful response. Even since I started this channel, my views have shifted a bit. I’m a bit harsher about movies that don’t bring much to the table. I had out more 2s and 3s than I used to

Your point "You should grade a lot of movies as 5s" is flawed. In order not to waste my time, I avoid mediocre or terrible movies. Usually, my established rule-of-thumb is, if it has less than 7 stars on IMDb, I'm not gonna watch it, unless it is controversial (i.e., probably a lot of unjustified downvotes) or a cult classic, ...or I'm just in the mood for something trashy to "cleanse my palate". Hence, most of the ratings I give are 6s to 9s, with 7 being most common.

I guess that if you miraculously only watch movies you end up liking, you may not rate many movies a 5. I can only speak from my own experience and even after figuring out what kind of movies I prefer, I see a fair number of average /mediocre/ok films. Sometimes, they just fail to deliver on their promise. Other times I’m trying out new creatives or subjects/genre not in my preference. I would contend that that there may be a lack of discernment if one would recommend every movie they ever see. You do mention rating things 6, which by my scheme is below a “recommend”, but just barely.

@@lowkeyclassicmovies Hey, thanks for replying as well. I guess I somehow adjusted my own rating scale to be "equivalent" to the IMDb ratings which I consult usually. Therefore, a 6 for me is already in "meh" territory; still enjoyable, but not really convincing. I also only very rarely give a 10; maybe once or twice a year. BTW, the reason I came across your video is that I wanted to harmonize my own rating scheme to be more consistent and fair, and I think it helped.

@@hymen0callis Thanks for the positive feedback! My recollection is that the imdb rankings are very condensed. The very best movies are maybe an 8.9 at most and absolutely terrible movies don't dip below 3.5. Tons of movies are between 6-7. On that scale, 6 or even 6.5 is an "average" movie score.

Used to have this mindset recently, but i started getting bored of movies that have a rating higher than a 5. Tbh, its the way you watch a movie that makes the movie. Whether its watching lawrence of arabia in 4k in a theater or watching g force at 2 am with drunk friends, any movie is enjoyable if you make it so

I think it is difficult to rate a movie without any kind of emotional attachment, but omitting a category for enjoyability must help. This is the difference between favour (subjective); and greatness (objective)

Thanks for commenting! All I was trying to do is give use a shared vocabulary for expressing our subjective opinions about the movies we see. Movies can have objective qualities but whether those qualities are important to us in enjoying a movie is still subjective.
@mossicely

Movies are art. I find that trying to rate a film solely on its objective qualities, which may or may not be important or effective depending on the person and how they are used, a bit tedious and flawed. Nobody cares about your ratings as much as you do, so I think if you aren't factoring your own appreciation and enjoyment into it you're not being true to yourself. But it's up to you how strongly your own personal enjoyment affects your rating.

I agree! Rates are good for quick communication, and you can expand on that with arguments. I also prefer the clean 1 to 10 scale. Pitchfork goes hardcore by adding decimals 😅
@lowkeyclassicmovies

Thanks for the feedback. Rather than add decimals, I note what the next closest grade is. So, if a rating is 6, then I will note the range is a 6-7 or a 5-6. That way, I know if it was closer to a 7 or a 5

I liked hearing about how your rating system is done, mine is sorta similar but allows me to categorize a film, on being amazing to terrible in technicality, while leaving space to be specific with how I felt about it. for me 8-10 is classics, 10 beings films with a profound impact on me, while 9 being maybe just as good but didn't reach that personal spark you'd need for a 10. 8 out of 10 is meaning I enjoyed it quite a fair amount and think the work in it is stellar, but there wasn't any peak of major enjoyment for me that stretches it into the higher scores. 5-7 are more run-of-the-mill movies, and the rating of 5 to 7 is purely on enjoyment, and allows a 7 being something I'd still recommend while it's being a newer film. while 2-4 are films are what I'd consider bad. the twist is usally a bad film that I give a 4, I usually enjoy more then the run of the mill films I give a 5. but this all really allows me to to add an extra layer on my rating system, so when looking back at it I cant really know what a number means. and for what 1 means, well... I try not to go there. In short I usually decide to rate a film on the 3 categories of technicality, then choose one of the three rating all based on how I felt.

@lowkeyclassicmovies Yes, this is an aspect I have thought about. Sometimes the whole is NOT as good as its parts. A movie could be well made in terms of cinema elements, but could still be unexciting, nonmemorable, or considered a bad/boring movie.

When I talk about movies, shows, books, games, etc, to my friends. I just put them into tiers: Tier 6: Dogsh*t(don't watch) Tier 5: Forgettable(had decent ideas but failed as a whole) Tier 4: Mixed(might be worth seeing, but wouldn't recommend to others or hype it up) Tier 3: Solid(worth checking out, probably better if you're already into that particular genre) Tier 2: Spectacular(definitely worth seeing, resonates with me) Tier 1: Iconic(hit me deep down, and most likely inspirational to me, whether it comes down to writing fiction or my personal approach to life like specific mindsets, interests, or hobbies)

I used to have a 10-1 rating system. Now its this. 5 - my favourite and most flawless: Masterpieces. 4.5 - extraordinary with littlest flaws and misses: Excellences. 4 - wonderful with minimal flaws: Gems. 3.5 - amazing with perceptible flaws: Merits. 3 - good with highly apparent flaws: Solids. 2 - highly flawed/bloated: Fodder. 1 - garbage: Garbage. Unrated - the worst film of all time: Garbage Juice.

I like sticking with whole numbers. The psychological difference between a 5 and 10 pt scale is interesting. I find that is sounds better to me to hear a movie got a 7 out of 10 versus a 3.5 out of 5, even though they are the same!

I’m strict when I rate movies with the star rating. I personally feel that you have to be as objective as you can be. I’ve seen people give so many movies 4 and 5 stars and I feel well what’s the point in it all then?, if you’re going to do that. A 5 star movie to me is perfection, and even though I’ve still yet to see some classic movies I personally have only ever watched two movies that I’ve rated 5 stars, and they are The Shining and Goodfellas, those two movies are perfection. A 4 star movie to me is a fantastic movie but just doesn’t quite reach perfection levels to me. Movies that I’ve rated 4 stars are Jaws, Alien, Terminator 2, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Taxi Driver, Casino, Heat, Psycho, Django Unchained, The Exorcist, etc etc. They are all fucking phenomenal movies but they just don’t quite hit perfection to me. I have rated two movies with 4 and half stars that are just near the tip of perfection in The Exorcist 3 which is better than the original, and Primal Fear. Those two movies hit so close to perfection but not fully perfect. For me The Shining and Goodfellas are perfection in Cinema.

I think movie reviewing is by its nature subjective. They are, at their root, emotion delivery systems. The key to reviewing them is to be true to yourself and hopefully consistent. I think there are objective aspects to movies but there are movies with objective flaws that I love and well made movies I didn’t enjoy very much.
