This is the best video on the internet. I went to school for 2 years and needed a refresher after being off work for a while. Ive never been able to read a diagram more clearly. Great job making it clear and simple!

hello, I started to see all your videos as they are the most complete videos I've seen about heat pumps. I have a question for you, have you worked with York heat pump package units? I have model YMKE60BNJMFMO-X and when it was winter time, it would blow "warm" air as it should but then the outdoor fan would stop and the air would turn cold and it would just blow cold. I thought it was the defrost cycle but the cold air never stopped. an hour could easily pass by with cold air so I had to turn off the unit and turn it back on at a later time or different day. any ideas why that would happen?

Craig, I love your videos, you are a great teacher and always give crystal clear explanations when covering a topic. However, I will have to disagree with the names you give the two types of wiring diagrams in this video. I was taught nearly 45 years ago the diagram to the left as I'm viewing them is the schematic or ladder diagram and the other is a pictorial diagram. Yes, the schematic diagram shows the connections and the pictorial diagram does this also and in addition the pictorial diagram shows the positions of the components with respect to one another. It also roughly depicts where they are located i.e. outdoor unit, air handler and so on. Please keep on giving us excellent info. Thanks, Rick. Craig, Oops, you were right.I didn't see the schematic diagram you were referring to above the pictorial diagram. Never mind, my bad. Sorry.

When replacing a bad contactor on that heat pump, make sure to follow the wiring color code and get the wires connected the same way to new contactor. If you mistakenly put the wire going to t1 of the defrost board on the same side of contactor with wire going to common, defrost will not work and you will wind up with a giant ice ball outside on condenser.

Thanks for nice video. If in case you like to remake this video. Untie all wires then you explains what wire where it goes to because touching the wire for beginners is confusing and have no clue where that wire physically goes to. The part you can explain half of the video only schematic then the second half/video you do both the schematic and wiring where they can follow and match with schematic. Again that was my suggestion. Thanks again for your great 👍 effotrs.

I already check all possible bad wire nuts connections, striped wires, thermostat, but still.......I need help please!....a friend of mine says that could be the solenoid reverse valve. let me know what could it be please. Thanks for your videos.

If you are still having this problem it very well could be the contactor for the compressor. They will go bad.

They label the DR coil and also the DR contacts between OF1 and OF2 going to the fan motor in the top part of the schematic. But they only imply the DR coil also closes the contacts to O and W2 by alignment even though that is usually a separate relay (the rectangular relay in the upper left of the board) that activates in parallel with the outdoor fan (DR) relay. I presume that is covered by the "& Circuitry" part of the label for "DR".

Note for Trane & American Standards heat pumps-your circuit diagrams may be much different from this one, especially if you have a demand defrost model with heat sensor thermistors for ambient and the coil.

that's heat-pump "heating" run time "between" defrost cycles, the actual defrost cycles is 10 minutes or less down to seconds. he did accidentally say seconds vs minutes lol. please go make some videos so we can critique them =p
