I've watched a lot of instructional videos on micrometers and this is by far the best. One small point though - I think you mean you can get more 'precise' micrometers, rather than more 'accurate.' In physics there is a significant difference between the two.

good explanation. the last part actually is very important as the hull with the engraved readings is, in most cases, fixed with a screw on the mic axle and could be moved both axially and laterally when referencing the mic. so there could be misalignment when not done properly, causing the .5 marks showing up quite early and confusing the measurements.

Thank you. We hired somebody recently who told us he had some experience but on the initial walk-through when we tried to test him he gave us the "my old shop was metric only" excuse. We hired him anyway but it turned out he had absolutely no experience. (He couldn't even get a consistent measurement with calipers. . . . I had to show him how to hold the dang things.) I bought some used metric measuring equipment so the next time someone gives us that excuse we can still have him/her prove it. I HATE LIARS! (He doesn't work for us anymore, we still gave him a chance but he crash a machine because he started it in the middle of a program after an incert change. . . . . He was still holding on to his excuse up till the bitter end.)
