3 years as a live tv production assistant, begging and pleading for my team to teach me deeper things than just "push this button to open a mic/animate a graphic" finally I download Davinci Resolve and take matters into my own hands and this has taught me more than my supposed team has ever bothered.

I studied "multiple camera production" as it was called back then, or TV Production, simply put, for one year (specialized school, living on campus one year and only studying that subject). I never went into the field in practice, and this is a good reminder of why I chose not to. About 5 years later, I saw a classmate of mine in the streets running behind some reporter like a packing mule, and again just got confirmed what I thought to begin with: It really is a business where people like to step on each other, rather than lift each other up. Hierarchy is king, and everyone seems to have to slave to the bone until the day they can move up and take out all that resentment on someone below them, because "now it is my time to be king".

lol drop the entitlement, YOURE A PA. I was one for 5 years here in LA. I'm now a union Camera operator. it's a dog-eat-dog world especially in our business, if you don't have a college degree to flaunt, you've got to be an extremely hard worker who doesn't complain and is HUNGRY, this will build you a circle of producer friends. production managers are the number one people you should kiss ass to always check in with them, there's always something to be done, don't be the guy who follows the rest of the lazy PA mentality. don't sit. this PM will remember you and once you work on multiple shows, they will ask you what you want out of this business. that's when you should already have an answer and know the entry level positions. for instance, you want to be an editor, they will hire you as a post PA. you'll spend time in the postproduction office where you can be even closer with the editors.

@@chammyy456 Just wanted to say. I don't work in this area at all, but I have worked in electrical, construction, HVAC, etc. The people who know what they're doing are trying to maximize their work against time, and they generally aren't going to be trying to teach the help the trades outside of what they expect that help to do. And just like you said, being hungry and eager to be HELPFUL to them is what will set you apart from the others. On those job sites if you're there and you don't have a tape-measure stuck to your belt and drawing/writing tools they don't see you as someone who understands what you need to be useful on the jobsite. We have a culture of low expectations that clashes with the high productivity of professional worksites. It's a huge disservice to people when we try to be very accommodating, never critical, and never kurt/short with people. Some of the most difficult people to work with have been some of the best teachers. Watch them work, and do what they ask, and you'll find they're open to sharing more with you as someone they can count on.

Wow, this is great. I kept looking at the vector parade and likening it to a histogram in Photoshop or on the back of the camera. The fact that the parade is literally representing what's across the screen was totally new info for me.

Great tutorial. Thank you Casey! I am just learning video editing and Davinci Resolve, after having spent a lot of time doing photo processing using Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC (amateur photographer). Hi Casey! I was watching your "How to Color Correct ANY Camera" video and saw this one. I just started a KZitem channel demonstrating crafts and my videos can come out really dark. I've got extra lighting and natural sunlight and a good camera, but my white background looks brown sometimes. I'm trying to fix it by using the color correcting in DaVinci. The current video I'm trying to fix doesn't have any black so I can't balance it. In the "Scopes" color parade it's high in red and low in blue. Every combo I try really distorts the video color. Any suggestions? Also, thank you so much for all your video tutorials! They've really helped me get navigate video editing! :o)

Hi Casey. Ok, so in FCP I learned how to use the Waveform, and was instructed to push to the very top line, and lower line to set exposure correctly. This seemed to work perfectly. Now having swapped over to Resolve, if I push to the 1023 line, it looks too bright, the lower 0 line for Blacks works the same as FCP. What would be your suggestion if I didn't look at the actual clip, that I should try to get my brightest point on the Scope Scale? Should it be 896, as this seems to be about the same as 100 would be in FCP. I hope that makes sense, I am loving DR, and as you know from my comments, I am following you religiously, but I am a little stuck on this particular piece, as like I say I always knew I had it right in FCP, and it worked perfectly and made things simple. With DR, I can't get it right. Any help would be appreciated ! thanks as usual.

my monitor is really bad, but scopes help me a lot. I use it more for color and less for exposure. Is there a hotkey I can use to switch between them? I use the RGB waveform(not parade) a lot and swap between it and the vector scope to check skintones and overall balance.
