Thank you for the videos. I'm not a dentist but interested in the field. Hoping I don't embarrass myself by using technical terms on my dental visits. It appears the x-ray machine works similarly to a CRT in an older television (that also produce x-rays, but they are shielded from escaping the tube). In a CRT, a metal cathode is heated to a high temperature so that it emits electrons. Those electrons are accelerated by a high voltage (25,000+ volts) and focused and scanned towards a phosphor screen which produces an image. In the case of an x-ray machine, those electrons from the heated cathode are directed towards the tungsten and allowed to pass out of the unit and towards the patient's mouth. Either way, you get a picture in the end, although I'm not sure a radiograph will win an Emmy. :)

Hi, I just started studying as a dental assistant and I'm having trouble understanding something related to the X-rays. If a full dental digital x-ray exam give a radiation dose of 0.06msv to the head then: 10 000 full exam in a very short time will cause death. 1 000 full exam in a very short time will cause severe injuries. 100 full exam in a very short time will cause mild injuries. 10 full exam in a very short time will cause light injuries. 1 full exam will cause side effect. 0.1 full dental exam (1 bitewing digital x-ray picture) will cause no noticeable side effect. You might ask why i calculated the risk this way its because we know the values when radiation start creating problem at these different level of severity. i just calculated how many x-ray it needed to reach these different level of suffering and death. i think those are pretty good ball park numbers.
