What my brain does is usually skip some words. Even though it does this, it can still comprehend what's going on by filling the blanks. Usually skipping past the minor or intricate details given by the book, then just summarizing it to simpler terms.

Ever since I was about 9-10 years old, I was really interested (still am) in reading, so I've always been able to read fast. This has its disadvantage though. If I'm reading out loud, my mind is halfway down the page when I haven't even finished saying the first ten words.
@aellyn2764

Same, and as a result, I absolutely hate reading out loud in front of the class a whole text, as I would be skipping words without noticing or even skip a line or two. Also, as I don’t vocalise, when reading out loud, my pronunciation is sometimes crooked or frankly bad, I dunno, I can’t read it considering words as actual words, sorry. For me, a bunch of words is a sensation, an action or anything lively, but not just words.

Something I noticed: So I'm pretty sure we all read those words at the end in our head still, but the neat thing about the voice in our heads is that unlike our actual voice, it can overlap itself or even speed up unrealistically to meet that expectation. With a regular book, there's no speed expectation, so It's hard to make our brain compute the information faster then the voice in our head can read without doubting if you're actually getting the right words or not. Not a useless tip, just phrased unfairly to make it seem easy to do.

As someone who reads hours each day. Nope. I don't do it faster. I've gotta vocalize almost all the words. Though I can scan when I need to and I do quite like the wpm function when apps like Kindle have it.

It's interesting to see how some people have grown up reading without vocalising, while others have started doing it later on in life or still haven't learnt it. The ability is largely dependant on how much reading we do as children. If you read enough whilst your brain is developing, the act becomes basically instinctual and you learn to almost seperate the concept of reading from the concept of speech, in a way. It becomes a new sub-level of writing.
