Hello! I'd like to thank you for your lessons. I've been having an on-and-off-relationship with my cello since I was eleven, and now my cello has been silent for almost 10 years, which really hurts me, but we have had such bad starts... Now, with your videos, and having a song as a goal (which I have suggested to former coaches only to have them roll their eyes at me, so thank you also for confirming my theory on how I would learn easier is an actual thing :) ), and a song I love, at that, I think we can reignate the friendship we had when I was a kid. I'm looking forward to taking it out of its leather coat, tuning it, and finally playing with the joy I felt before people started telling me my opinion is wrong once again. It'll be a bit frustrating having to start at the very beginning again, having played in the junior orchestra at school and whatnot, but it's worth it, and with your guidance, I think it'll be pretty nice and fun.

Thank you for this 3 part series! I appreciate your clarity and patience. I am 40 years old and just learning to play the cello, my very first instrument. I've always been fascinated and found solace in the harmony. The local classes include small children so this is a comfortable way for me to get familiar with my cello and fluidity of movement. Thank you for your guidance :)

Thank you Jonathan for sharing to us cello players in the world. Your demeanor and warm teaching delivery are truly a pleasure to learn from and follow. Got your scale book a little while ago and it is always used first as a warm up and review with the pieces I want to play or just plain practice. Also saw your video with Edgar in Italy with those cello luthiers. Wishing you all the best for you and your family and thanking you again for the foundational lessons you share.

Just like you, I sat in front of the computer and filmed these on the webcam. Hope these help you. TBH, you must revise and revise to make these lessons "stick" in your brain. If you learn to let go and be open to learning from your mistakes, the learning will be easy and happen faster.

Thank you very much for your great and very understandable lessons. I am 48yrs old and bought me a cello, never played an instrument with strings, but watching you video's made it so easy to understand. I'm still waiting on the cello's arival, but allready now how to understand the notes and its fingerposition :-)

thank you so much for this series! Even 3 and a half years after posting, this video series helps people like me! I'm actually relieved that you teach with plucking the strings first, instead of having to learn both the fingering and how to bow all at once! XD However, I'm having terrible trouble with my A string. I get it tuned open, but trying to find the fingering for the index finger to go up a whole step, not one-and-a-half, is reeeeally tough. I think this string goes flat as SOON as i start plucking it! :P The other strings are fine when I pluck them.

WOW! Thank you for sharing your gifts in playing the cello and teaching how to play it with us! Loved the three part series! No one could've explained it any clearer than you did. Oh and hey it's 2020 already haha I can't believe this video was back in 2017. Thank you, Sir! I would've have loved to download the materials but the link keeps on getting broken. Sigh. Anyway, please keep on sharing your wonderful videos and materials. I can't go to the music school at the moment because of the pandemic. You are a ray of hope for a complete beginner like me. Sir, you just made cello learning so understandable. Wow .... played violin in HS for 4 years.... long time as go. I am trying to learn while at the same time my son is learning at school so we will be teaching each other. This makes great sense and easy to understand. Love your box cello stand. Are those available for purchase or was that a custom made stand? Great videos. Thanks so much

I’m a beginner cellists and have an instructor a couple days a week now which is great but notice my thumb hurts holding the bow after just 10 minutes of playing. I feel it irritates me more on my right hand do to having carpal tunnel problems with a couple surgeries. Question is will the pain remain or get better in time as I progress and learn to hold the bow more comfortably or not? Just wondering from your experience. Thanks

Can you make a video on how to read shifts? Like when you take the higher notes and get further down the neck and how to tell when you have to do that (it's a bit hard to explain but I hope it is understandable)

Erm sounds different from what my piano teacher taught last time... Isn't the 'Do, Ré, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si, Do' follow the key as in tonic (Do), supertonic (Ré), mediant (Mi), subdominant (Fa), dominant (Sol), submediant (La), leading-note (Si), tonic (Do)?
@CelloCoach
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, so what is the issue?
@JoanKSX
5 жыл бұрын
@@CelloCoach Erm my teacher taught us like this:- In C major, C = Do (tonic), D = Re (supertonic), E = Mi (mediant) F = Fa (subdominant), G = Sol (dominant), A = La (submediant), B = Si (leading note), C = Do (tonic); while in G major, G = Do (tonic), A = Re (supertonic), B = Mi (mediant), C = Fa (subdominant), D = Sol (dominant), E = La (submediant), F# = Si (leading note), G = Do (tonic) ... and vice versa for every other major (/minor) keys scales (/notes) ... Or in France everything based on C major? By the way, you are a good teacher, clear and easy to understand. I'm glad that I found your channel. Sending best regards from Malaysia 😙 P.S. I'm not good in French 😅

I'm sorry but something is still missing my. What tells us to switch position?
@CelloCoach
5 жыл бұрын
I will explain this in more detail in the coming lessons. The short answer : after you have memorised the locations and notes for the 1st position on all strings, in addition to the open strings, then you have a template to compare any variance. As for what "tells us to switch position" is within your approach, you skill level. EX: the sequence "D - E - D - C#" within the stave can be played either "0 - 1 - 0 - +4" in extended 1st position OR "2 - 4 - 2 - 1" in +3rd position (upper 3rd). Familiarity, training and experience with the different positions are crucial to your enjoyment of cello music. More on +3rd position : kzitem.info/news/bejne/lJBruH-uapacmpg
